El Último Don

The Last Don is widely praised for Mario Puzo's signature writing style, which reviewers describe as authentic, dramatic, and chilling, capable of drawing readers deeply into his world and making them care for its characters, whether good or evil. Many commend the novel's masterful exploration of the tension between tradition and change as a powerful crime family attempts to transition into legitimate business. The intricate world-building, spanning the realms of the Mafia, Las Vegas casinos, and Hollywood film studios, is a significant highlight, offering a detailed look into the inner workings of these environments. Characters are frequently noted as beautifully drawn, complex, and fascinating, with particular appreciation for how Puzo develops them and orchestrates their dramatic collisions. The plot is generally regarded as expertly crafted, full of suspense, intrigue, and surprises, maintaining a compelling pace that makes for compulsive reading.

However, the book faces frequent comparisons to Puzo's earlier masterpiece, The Godfather, with many reviewers finding it falls short in terms of urgency, emotional investment, and narrative tightness. A common criticism is the novel's length and pacing, with some finding it too long, slow in the middle, and suffering from an extended setup that rushes the ending. The Hollywood subplot, while offering unique insights, is often cited as a weakness, described as pointless, forgettable, and weighing down the main narrative. Reviewers also express discomfort with the portrayal of women and sex in Hollywood within this section, and some find certain female characters underdeveloped or unlikeable. Additionally, some critics feel the book lacks a clear focus, attempting to weave too many disparate stories without fully developing the central theme of a crime family going legitimate, leading to a sense of frustration and an anticlimactic resolution for certain storylines.

Despite these criticisms, The Last Don is largely considered a solid and enjoyable read, with many deeming it a work of art and a classic Puzo novel. Reviewers appreciate its compelling characters and the author's talent for storytelling. The book is highly recommended for fans of The Godfather, those with an interest in mafia narratives, or readers who enjoy crime thrillers exploring themes of power, loyalty, and the complex transition from illicit to legitimate influence. It offers a captivating look at the corrupting forces of wealth and the challenges faced by a powerful family striving to reconcile old world values with modern ambitions.
