El alienista

The book is widely praised for its immersive and authentic recreation of Gilded Age New York City in 1896. Reviewers highlight the vivid descriptions that bring the era to life, from its seedy underbelly to its opulent high society, making readers feel transported to the gaslit streets. Many commend the author's skillful integration of real historical figures, such as Theodore Roosevelt, into the narrative, lending a strong sense of authenticity to the story. A significant positive is the novel's pioneering focus on the nascent fields of criminal psychology and forensic science, with the investigative team employing early methods of psychological profiling, fingerprinting, and handwriting analysis to track a serial killer. For many, this intellectual approach to a "whydunit" mystery, combined with compelling characters like the enigmatic Dr. Laszlo Kreizler and the capable Sara Howard, results in a gripping and captivating read.

Despite its strengths, several reviewers found the book to have notable drawbacks. A common critique centers on its pacing, with some describing the narrative as plodding, overly long, or lacking the rapid pace typically expected of a thriller. This perceived slowness is often attributed to the author's extensive historical detail and frequent tangents, which some felt amounted to "info-dumping" rather than purposeful plot development. The characters, while appreciated by some, were found by others to be stereotypical, lacking emotional depth, or too reminiscent of established archetypes. A few reviewers also expressed disappointment with the ending, describing it as flat, anti-climactic, or an insufficient resolution after a lengthy build-up. Additionally, some felt the plot itself was predictable or too familiar, and specific repetitive descriptions became tiresome.

Overall, the book is considered a well-crafted historical mystery that excels in its atmospheric setting and exploration of early criminal profiling. While its deliberate pace and extensive detail may not appeal to all, particularly those seeking a fast-paced modern thriller, it offers a rich and intelligent experience for the right reader. This book is highly recommended for fans of historical fiction who appreciate deep dives into a specific era, readers interested in the origins of forensic psychology and detective work, and those who enjoy a cerebral "whydunit" mystery. It will particularly resonate with audiences who enjoyed works like "Mindhunter" or Sherlock Holmes-style investigations, provided they are prepared for a more expansive and meticulously detailed narrative.
