El deseo de cambiar: Hombres, masculinidad y amor

Patriarchy, a system that insists on male dominance and superiority, profoundly damages the emotional and spiritual lives of both men and women. It is a pervasive cultural force, demanding that men suppress their emotions and disconnect from their authentic selves from a young age, thereby hindering their capacity for love and genuine connection. This societal conditioning forces boys to adopt a rigid, commanding version of manhood, often equating masculinity with the exaltation of solitude and the repression of all feelings except anger. The relentless expectation that men must remain unemotional impedes their full participation in nurturing their emotional well-being and embracing the entirety of their human experience.

From childhood, boys are taught to wear a mask, to betray their true selves in order to realize the patriarchal ideal. This early self-betrayal, often rewarded, is a form of soul murder, leaving men isolated and emotionally stunted. They are loved not for who they are, but for what they can provide or do, leading to a deep-seated psychological distress and an inability to establish meaningful relationships. The absence of a framework for navigating the universe of feelings means many men simply do not know how to be deeply caring human beings.

The profound pain of modern manhood stems from this incapability of love, directly caused by a toxic patriarchal culture that forbids men to express their emotions freely. This culture does not teach the value of sensitivity, instead highlighting the supremacy of men's power, authority, and rage as sources of inner force. Consequently, many women experience a pathological lack of male love, craving genuine affection from partners, friends, fathers, and brothers, yet often encountering emotional unavailability.

Feminism, in its truest form, must recognize that sexism and sexist exploitation will not change unless men are deeply engaged in feminist resistance. It is a fiction of false feminism that women can find power by denying their connections to men. Instead, we claim our power fully when we acknowledge our need for men to challenge patriarchy and to change. This does not diminish male responsibility for perpetuating oppression, but it highlights the shared hurt caused by rigid sexist role patterns.

A new definition of masculinity is urgently needed, one that embraces tenderness, integrity, and emotional awareness. Men can restore their dignity and capacity for love by adopting a vision of manhood informed by feminist values, promoting ideals of equity, empathy, and reciprocal regard. This involves healing the male spirit by encouraging emotional awareness, rejecting dominator models of masculinity, and creating environments that support healthier, non-violent expressions of maleness.

The will to change is a powerful force, and men are not inherently resistant to inner transformation; often, they simply lack the guidance to navigate their emotional landscapes. Embracing feminist principles allows men to heal from the harms inflicted by conventional masculinity, reconnect with their authentic selves, and develop a profound capacity for mutual love and respect across gender lines. It is through this transformative process, a reordering and recentering of our shared humanity, that both men and women can move towards a more compassionate and loving society.
