Arundhati Roy's Booker Prize-winning novel, The God of Small Things, transports readers to the lush, humid landscape of Ayemenem, Kerala, in 1969. It introduces the fraternal twins, Rahel and Estha, whose idyllic childhood is irrevocably altered by a series of events, including the arrival of their English cousin, Sophie Mol, and a forbidden love affair that transgresses the rigid social codes of their community.
The narrative unfolds through a non-linear lens, weaving between past and present to reveal how seemingly insignificant moments, the "small things," accumulate to shape lives and destinies within a world bound by unspoken "Love Laws" and the lingering shadows of caste and class. This story of family, loss, and the enduring power of memory invites readers to witness the profound and often tragic consequences when societal boundaries are challenged.

What other readers say
Liked
Reviews for The God of Small Things frequently praise its lyrical and evocative prose, describing it as masterful, beautiful, and rich in imagery. Many readers were deeply moved by the storytelling, finding it poignant, heartbreaking, and emotionally impactful. The novel is celebrated for its intricate structure and clever narrative, which weaves a complex tale across generations. Reviewers noted its insightful exploration of significant themes, including the injustice of the caste system, the complexities of love and loss, betrayal, and the pervasive weight of societal expectations within Indian culture. The characters, despite some differing opinions, are often highlighted as vivid, memorable, and multi-dimensional, contributing to a powerful and unforgettable reading experience that many consider a modern classic.
Disliked
However, the book's distinctive style is also a source of significant criticism. A common complaint centers on the disjointed and nonlinear timeline, with frequent jumps and flashbacks that many found confusing, disorienting, and difficult to follow, especially in audiobook format. The prose, while beautiful to some, was described by others as overly complicated, dense, self-conscious, or even tiresome, with an overuse of metaphors that sometimes obscured meaning or hindered plot progression. Some reviewers felt the characters were underdeveloped or two-dimensional, lacking a deeper connection, and that the overall plot could be a "giant grey mess" without clear direction. Additionally, some readers found certain elements of the plot to be gratuitous or deeply disturbing, touching on very difficult and sensitive themes that made for a challenging and, at times, uncomfortable read.
In short
Ultimately, The God of Small Things emerges as a critically acclaimed but polarizing work. It is highly recommended for readers who appreciate rich, experimental prose, complex narrative structures that challenge conventional storytelling, and a deep exploration of family dynamics and societal issues within a specific cultural context. Those willing to engage with a challenging and emotionally intense narrative, which includes difficult subject matter, are likely to find it a profoundly rewarding experience. Conversely, readers who prefer linear plots, straightforward prose, or lighter themes might find its density and challenging content less appealing.
