At last, in Barcelona, Don Quixote faced his ultimate challenge. He was confronted by the Knight of the White Moon, who, in truth, was his old friend and neighbor, Sansón Carrasco, disguised and determined to cure him of his madness. In a duel on the beach, Don Quixote was defeated. The terms of his surrender were clear: he was to return home and cease his knight-errantry for a full year.

With his spirit broken and his chivalric dreams shattered, Don Quixote, accompanied by a somber Sancho, made the slow journey back to his village. The world, which he had so long seen through the lens of romance, now appeared in its stark reality. He fell ill, his body weakening as his mind cleared. On his deathbed, Alonso Quijano regained his sanity, renouncing the books of chivalry that had led him astray, acknowledging them as mere foolishness.
