In postwar Germany, fifteen-year-old Michael Berg falls ill and is helped by Hanna, a woman more than twice his age. An intense and secretive affair begins, marked by a peculiar ritual: before they make love, Michael must read aloud to her. Their connection is abruptly severed when Hanna disappears without a word, leaving Michael heartbroken. Years later, as a law student observing a trial of former concentration camp guards, he is stunned to see Hanna in the courtroom, facing horrific accusations from her past.

As the trial unfolds, Michael realizes Hanna is hiding a secret she considers more shameful than murder, a secret that holds the key to her defense. He is faced with a devastating choice that will force him to confront the complexities of love, guilt, and the incomprehensible actions of a past generation. The story explores the deep moral questions of how a nation, and an individual, can come to terms with a history of profound atrocity, raising a powerful inquiry into judgment, understanding, and accountability.
