El motel Sun Down

The year is 1982, and twenty-year-old Viv Delaney arrives in Fell, New York, a town she never intended to stay in, on her way to New York City. Short on cash, she takes a job as the night clerk at the Sun Down Motel, a place that feels stuck in time, isolated and eerie. Almost immediately, Viv senses something profoundly wrong within its walls. Doors open and close on their own, a pervasive smell of cigarette smoke hangs in the air, and a chilling presence whispers through the dimly lit corridors. She soon learns of a string of unsolved murders of young women in the area, and a local girl named Tracy Waters is among them, her ghost seemingly tied to the motel's unsettling secrets.

Viv, restless and intelligent, begins to piece together the strange occurrences, documenting them in a notebook. She befriends Alma, the lone female police officer on the night shift, and a photographer staying at the motel, but largely pursues her own amateur investigation into the murders. The spectral activity at the Sun Down Motel isn't just a fright; it feels like the forgotten voices of the victims, demanding to be heard. Viv becomes obsessed, driven by empathy for the murdered women and a growing conviction that the motel holds the key to their tragic ends. Her determination leads her down a dangerous path, drawing her closer to the darkness that infests Fell.

Thirty-five years later, in 2017, Viv's niece, Carly Kirk, finds herself drawn to Fell, haunted by the unsolved mystery of her aunt's disappearance. Her mother's recent death and a deep-seated fascination with true crime fuel her quest for answers about Viv, who vanished without a trace from the Sun Down Motel. Carly arrives in Fell to find that the town, and the motel itself, seem to have changed little since 1982. She takes on the very same night clerk position her aunt once held, stepping into Viv's shoes and immersing herself in the chilling atmosphere of the Sun Down.

As Carly settles into her new, eerie routine, she too begins to experience the inexplicable. Doors swing open, cold spots appear, and the spectral presence that tormented Viv now makes itself known to her. Unlike Viv, however, Carly finds allies in her new roommate, Heather, and a fellow motel resident, Nick, allowing her to share the burden of the motel's unsettling truths. She unearths old newspaper clippings and town archives, discovering that Viv was not the only young woman to disappear or be murdered in Fell, and that the town has a long, dark history of violence against women.

The narrative alternates between Viv's increasingly perilous investigation in 1982 and Carly's present-day search for the truth, revealing striking parallels between their experiences. Both women, brave and resourceful, confront the indifference of authorities and the menacing secrets of Fell. Carly's journey mirrors Viv's, as she realizes that the ghosts of the Sun Down aren't merely there to scare, but to guide her towards the truth of what happened to her aunt and the other forgotten victims.

Carly's relentless pursuit of answers eventually uncovers the identity of the killer, a revelation that spans decades and exposes the deep-seated evil lurking in Fell. The climax reveals Viv's final, desperate confrontation with the murderer, Simon Hess, where she kills him in self-defense, a truth she records in her notebook before her own disappearance. This notebook becomes the crucial link, found by Carly, that finally brings justice and closure to the long-unanswered questions.

In the end, the Sun Down Motel, a place that held so much horror and loss, is ultimately demolished. Its physical destruction symbolizes the end of a dark chapter for Fell and for the women whose lives were intertwined with its sinister history. Carly, having faced down the past and brought its secrets to light, can finally look towards a future free from the haunting mystery that defined her family for so long.
