El pescador

The reviews frequently praise the book's masterful and literary writing style, describing it as sharp, imaginative, and poetic, drawing readers into a captivating experience from beginning to end. Many found the narrative to be a potent blend of cosmic horror, dark folklore, and profound human themes, particularly the exploration of loss, grief, and the impossibility of moving on unchanged. Readers connected deeply with the main characters, two widowers who find solace and a therapeutic bond through fishing, making them relatable despite the escalating supernatural events. The story's structure, often described as a compelling "story within a story," was lauded by many for its seamless execution and ability to build a rich mythology and atmosphere of dread, culminating in chilling and terrifying moments that evoke existential fear.

However, the book's structure and pacing were points of contention for some readers. A common criticism revolved around the extensive "story within a story" element, which some found to be overly long, wordy, or jarring, causing a significant lull in the narrative and making it difficult to stay focused. Reviewers noted that this extended flashback often felt like a detour, pulling them away from the immediate protagonists and their developing relationship. While some appreciated the detailed prose, others felt the book was too verbose, laboring points and creating a slow burn that occasionally stalled into tediousness rather than building tension effectively. A few also found the horror elements, particularly the monsters and scares in later sections, to be somewhat predictable, and the overall emotional resonance with the protagonists to be less impactful than intended.

Despite these mixed reactions, the consensus among reviewers leans strongly positive, with many hailing The Fisherman as an outstanding and memorable read, even for those not typically drawn to horror. It is frequently recommended for fans of literary horror who appreciate a slow burn narrative that delves into deep emotional themes alongside its cosmic dread. Readers who enjoy intricate, atmospheric writing, Lovecraftian influences, and stories that explore the complexities of grief and human resilience will likely find this book profoundly rewarding. However, those who prefer fast-paced plots, direct storytelling, or are averse to extensive narrative detours might find it a challenging read.
