El poder del mito

The reviews highlight "The Power of Myth" as an insightful and profoundly eye-opening work that compels readers to think deeply about the role of myths in human culture and their impact on the individual psyche and spirit. Many found Joseph Campbell's articulation of these ideas compelling and transformative, offering a refreshing, non-dogmatic perspective on religion and spirituality. The book is praised for revealing universal patterns and shared fundamental experiences across diverse myths, making ancient stories relevant to contemporary life. Readers often describe it as an inspiring and engrossing experience that encourages the exploration of intrinsic values, personal meaning, and purpose, famously encapsulated in the advice to "follow your bliss." It is seen as an accessible summary of Campbell's extensive scholarship, making complex philosophical and mythological concepts understandable.

Despite its praised insights, the book also garners significant criticism. Some readers found Campbell's arguments to be stretched, far-fetched, or simplistic, leading to moments of frustration. Concerns were raised about the academic rigor, with mentions of historical inaccuracies and reliance on unscientific theories. The conversational interview format, while engaging for some, was perceived by others as rambling, lacking cohesion, and making it difficult to internalize information. A recurring critique is that the book is overly preachy, focusing excessively on "transcendence" and the need for spirituality rather than a purely historical or anthropological study of myths. Campbell's commentary on modern society and perceived outdated views on topics like gender roles, multiculturalism, or the causes of societal problems were also points of contention for several reviewers, who felt he idealized ancient cultures while overlooking negative aspects of human history.

Ultimately, "The Power of Myth" is a polarizing book, often described as either deeply transformative or profoundly frustrating. It is highly recommended for readers with a curious mind who are open to exploring the metaphorical and psychological dimensions of myths, their spiritual relevance, and their connection to the broader human experience. Those who appreciate a non-dogmatic approach to spirituality and enjoy philosophical discussions about life's mysteries are likely to find it a valuable and enriching read. However, it may not appeal to readers seeking a strictly academic, historical, or concrete analysis of mythology, or those who are put off by mystical interpretations, social commentary perceived as outdated, or a less structured narrative. Its widely disseminated ideas may also feel less novel to those already familiar with Campbell's work.
