El resplandor

The reviews consistently praise the book as a highly effective and genuinely scary horror story, often calling it a classic of the genre that delivers gut-wrenching terror and keeps readers on edge. It is lauded for its deep characterization, particularly the complex portrayal of Jack Torrance, who is seen as a victim grappling with profound personal challenges like alcoholism and anger, rather than a simple villain. Wendy and Hallorann are also noted for their well-developed and nuanced roles. The novel is celebrated for its thematic depth, exploring the disintegration of a family, the devastating impact of addiction, and a child's resilience in a troubled home. Reviewers consistently highlight the masterful creation of atmosphere, with the hotel itself becoming a powerful, eerie character in the story, and King's writing style is commended for its exquisite construction, psychological insight, and ability to build tension slowly and methodically.

A recurring point of discussion among reviewers is the significant divergence from the well-known film adaptation. Many note that the movie misrepresents core characters and themes, especially the nuanced portrayal of Jack and the roles of Wendy and Hallorann. Some argue the film simplifies the story into pure "spook house" horror, while one reviewer even found the book less terrifying and thematically rich compared to the film. Some readers felt the book occasionally suffered from King's tendency to overwrite, leading to lengthy details that could slow the pace, though others found the detailed setup worthwhile. Minor criticisms include a perceived inconsistency in Danny's age-appropriate dialogue at times, and the absence of suggestions for real-world solutions like addiction support groups. A few reviewers also pointed out the inclusion of outdated or uncomfortable elements, such as racial slurs and a strong "male gaze" in descriptions of female characters.

Despite these criticisms, the overall consensus is that the book is a masterpiece and an enduring classic of American literature, often cited as one of Stephen King's best works. It is praised as a brilliant and unforgettable read that offers profound psychological insights alongside its chilling narrative. This book is highly recommended for readers who appreciate horror stories with significant underlying emotional content and deep character studies, particularly those exploring themes of addiction and family dynamics. It is ideal for fans who enjoy a slow-burning build of tension and atmosphere, where the setting itself becomes a formidable presence. Both long-time King enthusiasts and those new to his work, especially those willing to engage with a story that prioritizes psychological depth over immediate scares, are likely to find this a compelling and rewarding experience.
