What followed was a thrilling river chase, with the police launch closing in on the Aurora. During the desperate flight, the Andamanese, Tonga, a fearsome figure armed with poisoned darts, was shot down as he attempted to strike Holmes.

Finally, Jonathan Small, the one-legged man, was captured after running the Aurora aground. But the treasure chest, the object of so much greed and violence, was empty. Small, in a final act of defiance, had scattered the jewels into the murky depths of the Thames during the chase. In the confines of the police station, Small recounted his astonishing tale: a soldier in India, he had lost his leg to a crocodile. Amidst the chaos of the Indian Rebellion, he and three Sikh confederates, "The Four," had stumbled upon and stolen a vast treasure from an Indian Raja.

Small then spoke of betrayal. He and his partners, imprisoned, had entrusted the secret of the treasure to Major Sholto and Captain Morstan, who were guards at the penal colony. Sholto, driven by avarice, had absconded with the entire fortune, leaving Small and his allies to languish. Captain Morstan, Mary's father, had later confronted Sholto, leading to a fatal argument and Morstan's accidental death. Small, burning with a desire for vengeance and his rightful share, had eventually escaped with the aid of Tonga, an islander whose life he had once saved. Their mission was to reclaim the treasure, a quest that had led to the deaths of the Sholto brothers.

As the intricate web of deception and greed unraveled, a quiet romance blossomed between Dr. Watson and Miss Mary Morstan. The loss of the treasure, far from being a tragedy, removed any perceived barrier between them, and Watson, captivated by Mary's charm and kindness, proposed marriage, a union she happily accepted.
