Readers generally found this book to be a highly entertaining and fast-paced adventure, praising Rick Riordan's consistent ability to craft engaging stories. Many reviewers highlighted the author's modern, youthful, and often humorous approach to Egyptian mythology, making the world-building both informative and captivating. The sibling dynamic between the main characters, Sadie and Carter, was a particular strong point, with their growth, snarky dialogue, and supportive relationship resonating positively with readers. Several new characters introduced in this installment were also welcomed additions, contributing to the overall fun and action-packed narrative. For many, this sequel represented a notable improvement over the first book in the series.

Despite its strengths, the book received criticism for several aspects. Some reviewers found the pacing inconsistent, with certain plot points feeling rushed while others dragged. A recurring concern was the perceived lack of tension, attributed to magical problem-solving that felt too convenient or relied on new entities appearing to resolve crises. The romantic subplots, particularly a love triangle involving one of the main protagonists, were frequently described as awkward, cringy, or problematic due to significant age differences. Character decisions were occasionally seen as illogical or not serious enough given the high stakes, and some found the attempts at humor fell flat. Additionally, some readers noted inconsistencies in the magical rules of the world, questioned certain descriptive choices, and pointed out issues with the audiobook narration.

Overall, while not without its significant flaws, the book is generally considered an entertaining read, often seen as an improvement on its predecessor. It comes highly recommended for existing fans of Rick Riordan's mythological adventure series, particularly those who enjoy his signature blend of action, humor, and modern takes on ancient lore. The fast-paced narrative and engaging character dynamics make it a suitable choice for middle-grade readers, and it is especially noted as a good option for reluctant readers who appreciate action-driven stories, despite the criticisms regarding its romantic elements and occasional plot conveniences.
