When fifteen-year-old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is a lucky discovery for a poor farm boy. But when the stone hatches a dragon, he realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy as old as the Empire itself. Overnight, his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic, and power. With only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon is swept into a dangerous conflict with a king whose evil knows no bounds.

Now, hunted by the Empire's dark forces, Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, must navigate treacherous terrain and even more dangerous enemies. He must take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders, a role he is unprepared for, but one he must accept to challenge the vast power of the king. His choices could either save the Empire or lead to its total destruction, and the fate of an entire civilization may rest in his hands.

Readers frequently express a deep affection for this book, often cherishing it as a formative reading experience from their middle school or teenage years. Many credit Eragon with introducing them to the fantasy genre, sparking a lifelong love for reading and imaginative worlds. Positive reviews highlight the appeal of classic fantasy elements such as dragons, elves, magic, and swordplay, praising the engaging adventures and the strong, protective bond between the protagonist and his dragon. The story is seen by some as an inspiring journey of embracing destiny and purpose, with vivid characters and epic battles. For some, rereading it as adults still evokes nostalgic enjoyment, despite acknowledging potential flaws.

Conversely, a significant portion of the reviews criticize the book for its lack of originality, frequently calling it a collection of overused fantasy tropes and clichés. Many reviewers draw direct comparisons to established works like "Lord of the Rings" and "Star Wars," suggesting the plot and world-building are derivative rather than innovative. Common complaints include immature and stilted writing, overly pretentious prose, and clumsy foreshadowing. Characters are often described as flat, unmemorable, and lacking believable depth, with the protagonist sometimes labeled a "Gary Stu" for his rapid acquisition of skills and seemingly perfect nature. Reviewers also point out plot holes, forced interactions, and generic world-building, suggesting the book would have benefited from more rigorous editing, especially given the author's young age at the time of writing. The audiobook's voice for the dragon is also a specific point of criticism for some listeners.

Ultimately, the reception of Eragon appears to be highly dependent on the reader's age and familiarity with the fantasy genre. It is widely regarded as an excellent entry point for children and young teenagers, capable of captivating new readers with its straightforward hero's journey and classic fantasy appeal. However, readers who are well-versed in fantasy literature, particularly adults, are more likely to find it derivative and structurally flawed. This book would appeal most to young readers seeking an accessible, action-packed fantasy adventure featuring dragons and magic, or those who enjoy revisiting nostalgic reads from their youth.
