The book is highly praised for its rich and insightful depiction of interwar intellectual life, masterfully capturing the era's complexities, rivalries, political and social tensions, including the rise of antisemitism. Reviewers commend its meticulous case studies of prominent cultural figures, which not only illuminate their relationships with the main subject but also explore their broader cultural significance. The author is lauded for a tactful and balanced approach to sensitive historical periods, providing deep contextualization of a turbulent era. The work is particularly noted for its just and well-argued observations on controversial topics, offering a corrective and nuanced perspective that challenges previous interpretations.

While the book is largely praised for its robust scholarship, the reviews also touch upon the broader, sometimes contentious, cultural discussion surrounding the subject's contemporary significance. One perspective suggests that his current canonical status may stem less from purely aesthetic merit and more from external factors, such as the increasing cultural emphasis on memory, personal narratives, and ethical considerations. This observation highlights a complex aspect of the subject's legacy that the book skillfully explores, providing context for his multifaceted reception.

Overall, the book emerges as a crucial and significant contribution, offering a deep, objective, and meticulously researched study that moves beyond simplistic narratives. It provides a valuable corrective, encouraging readers to engage with the subject's complex identity and historical context rather than sentimentalized portrayals. This work would particularly appeal to readers interested in interwar intellectual history, the nuanced biography of a key cultural figure, and the societal forces that shaped that period. It is recommended for those who appreciate scholarly rigor, a balanced approach to polemical subjects, and a re-evaluation of cultural figures based on comprehensive historical understanding.
