Faidōn

The heavy chains had been removed from Socrates' legs, leaving a familiar ache that spoke of his long wait. We, his friends, had gathered once more in his prison cell, our hearts a knot of sorrow, though he himself remained serene, even cheerful. The ship to Delos, whose annual voyage had delayed his execution, had at last returned, and this was to be his final day. Echecrates, you asked me to recount it, and though the memory is bittersweet, I shall.

Socrates, ever the philosopher, began not with lament, but with a discourse on why a true philosopher should welcome death. He explained that our bodies are but prisons, filled with desires and sensory distractions that hinder the soul's pursuit of truth. The eyes and ears, he argued, deceive us; true knowledge, the Forms of Beauty and Justice themselves, can only be grasped by the soul when it is unburdened by the flesh, through pure thought. Death, then, is not an end to be feared, but a liberation, a chance for the soul to finally achieve the wisdom it sought throughout life.

But my friends, Simmias and Cebes, though moved by his words, expressed their doubts. Cebes worried that the soul, upon leaving the body, might simply disperse like breath or smoke into nothingness. Socrates, with his gentle patience, began to lay out his arguments for the soul's immortality. He first spoke of how all things come from their opposites: the living from the dead, and the dead from the living, in an eternal cycle. If death were a final end, he reasoned, all life would eventually cease, never to return. Therefore, the souls of the dead must exist somewhere, preparing to be reborn.

Next, he turned to the theory of recollection, a concept that had long fascinated us. He reminded us that when we encounter imperfect earthly things, we recognize their shortcomings by comparing them to perfect, unchanging Forms that we must have known before this life. How else, he asked, could we grasp the concept of perfect equality or beauty if we had not encountered it with our souls in a pre-existent state? Learning, then, is not acquiring new knowledge, but remembering what our souls already knew, proving its existence before birth.

Socrates then offered the affinity argument. He contrasted the body, which is visible, composite, and mortal, with the soul, which is invisible, simple, and akin to the divine and unchanging Forms. Things that are composite can be broken apart, but what is simple and divine, like the soul, is more likely to endure. The body decays, yet the soul, if it has lived virtuously, can journey to a realm of pure thought, free from the earthly defilements that cling to an impure soul.

Simmias and Cebes, still grappling with their concerns, raised further objections, likening the soul to the harmony of a lyre, which ceases when the lyre is broken, or suggesting that the soul might wear out through many reincarnations. Socrates, however, addressed these with careful reasoning, reinforcing the idea of the eternal, unchanging Forms. He introduced his final argument, explaining that certain Forms inherently exclude their opposites. Just as the Form of Fire always brings heat and excludes cold, and the Form of Three always brings oddness and excludes evenness, so too does the Form of Life, which is inextricably linked to the soul, exclude death. Therefore, the soul, being that which brings life, cannot admit death; it is deathless and indestructible.

With these arguments, a profound sense of conviction settled upon us. Socrates then painted a vivid picture of the true Earth, far more beautiful and pure than the one we inhabit, and spoke of the different fates awaiting souls in the afterlife, depending on their deeds in life. He described a journey to a place of judgment and purification, or to a realm of blessedness for those who lived justly and philosophically. He urged us to live well, for the prize is great and the hope glorious.

As the sun began to set, the prison attendant arrived with the cup of hemlock. Socrates took it without a tremor, his face calm, his gaze unwavering. He offered a prayer to the gods, asking for a prosperous journey for his soul. Then, he drank the poison. We watched, tears streaming down our faces, as the coldness spread through his limbs. His last words, whispered to Crito, were about a debt owed to Asclepius, a rooster to be sacrificed. And then, he was gone, a man of unparalleled wisdom, facing death not with fear, but with the quiet confidence of a soul preparing for its true home.
