Final Girls

The book is widely praised for its compelling and unique premise, which cleverly adapts the "final girl" trope from horror films into a psychological thriller. Many readers found the story to be an unputdownable, addictive, and fast-paced read, often devouring it in just a couple of sittings. Reviewers frequently highlighted the novel's ability to deliver surprising twists and turns, keeping them guessing until the very end and appreciating that their initial theories were often proven wrong. The narrative successfully builds a dark, unsettling, and suspenseful atmosphere, particularly in its depiction of past events. Fans of slasher films or B-horror cinema especially enjoyed how the book captured the essence and tropes of the genre, creating an entertaining and engaging experience on the page. Some also appreciated the main character's unique coping mechanisms and her baking blog as a charming detail.

Despite its strengths, a significant number of reviews pointed out issues with the book's pacing, particularly in the first two-thirds, which many found to be slow, repetitive, and lacking significant plot development. Readers often felt bored during these sections, noting repetitive dialogue and character interactions. Characterization was another common critique, with many finding the protagonist and supporting cast to be flat, unlikable, or making questionable decisions that strained credulity. While some enjoyed the twists, others felt the reveals were disappointing, nonsensical, or predictable, not fitting well with the overall story or sacrificing consistent character logic for shock value. Some reviewers also struggled with the level of suspension of disbelief required for certain plot elements, such as the ongoing media obsession with the "final girls" years after their traumas, and found the use of a repressed memory trope to be an uninspired narrative device.

Overall, the book elicits a mixed but generally positive reception, often described as an entertaining and thrilling ride despite its acknowledged flaws. It is considered a solid debut for the author, showcasing promise for future works. This novel would particularly appeal to readers who are relatively new to the thriller genre and are seeking a fast-paced, suspenseful story with numerous plot twists that will keep them guessing. It is also highly recommended for fans of slasher films or B-horror who appreciate a story that plays with familiar tropes and prioritizes entertainment and surprise over deep character studies or strict realism. Those looking for a dark, engaging read that can be easily consumed over a weekend are likely to enjoy this unique take on survival and trauma.
