FLASHMAN AND THE REDSKINS - From The Flashman Papers 1849 - 1850 and 1875 - 1876

Reviewers widely praise this installment of the Flashman Papers for its brilliant blend of historical accuracy and engaging storytelling. George MacDonald Fraser is lauded for his faultless integration of the fictional protagonist into real historical events, demonstrating an impressive grasp of the era, particularly the American West. Readers appreciate the novel's ability to both amuse and inform, offering a rich tapestry of facts and true scholarship that makes history approachable and vivid. The book is frequently described as hilarious, full of high adventure, and packed with Flashman's characteristic salacious escapades. Many find Flashman himself, despite his self-confessed scoundrel nature, to be a fascinating and remarkably likeable antihero, often exhibiting surprising courage when survival is on the line. The ingenious way the author links two distinct time periods within the narrative and the inclusion of numerous historical figures are also highlighted as major strengths, contributing to a fast-paced and epic read.

Despite the widespread enjoyment, some reviewers point out aspects that might not appeal to all readers. Flashman's behavior, particularly towards women, is consistently described as appalling, horrific, and politically incorrect, leading some to find him difficult to stomach. The book's structure, presented in two distinct parts covering different time periods, is seen by a few as disjointed, suggesting it might have worked better as two separate, shorter novels. There are comments that the second half does not always maintain the same epic scope or engaging pace as the first. A few readers felt the historical detail occasionally overshadowed the narrative, making the plot feel less tightly woven than in other series entries. Concerns are also raised about the inclusion of racial slurs, which, while acknowledged as part of the series' satirical intent, can be off-putting, and some advise against reading the book in public due to its "for-adults-only" content.

Overall, "Flashman and the Redskins" is highly recommended by most reviewers as a superb entry in the series, with many considering it one of Fraser's finest works and even a personal favorite. It is celebrated as a "national treasure" that offers a unique combination of humor, adventure, and deep historical insight. This book is ideally suited for readers who enjoy historical fiction with a strong comedic element and an antihero protagonist who is both deplorable and undeniably entertaining. Fans of the Flashman series will find the familiar blend of rollicking escapades, fascinating historical encounters, and penetrating satire. It particularly appeals to aficionados of the American West's history who appreciate a well-researched yet lighthearted approach, provided they are prepared for the protagonist's questionable morals and the politically incorrect humor inherent in the series.
