Flat Broke with Two Goats A Memoir

The memoir Flat Broke with Two Goats is often praised for its engaging narrative and the author's talent for storytelling. Many readers found the writing to be clear, beautiful, and filled with sharp observations, making it an absorbing and at times humorous read. Reviewers appreciated the author's courage and honesty in sharing her personal story, including her own mistakes and the emotional journey of rebuilding. A significant highlight for many was the detailed and affectionate portrayal of animal husbandry, particularly the goats and chickens, whose personalities and roles in the family's new life are described with both humor and spiritual depth. The book also garnered positive remarks for its vivid sense of place, painting a compelling picture of life in rural Appalachia.

Despite its strengths, the memoir drew considerable criticism, primarily concerning the author's perceived lack of personal responsibility and privilege. Many reviewers expressed frustration and even anger at what they saw as self-delusional decision-making, an inability to learn from mistakes, and a general lack of growth throughout the narrative. Specific lifestyle choices, such as continued spending on non-essentials or private education despite financial woes, were frequently cited as evidence of a disconnect from true hardship. Some found the writing style to be uneven, at times clichéd or rambling, while others felt the book lacked a professional structure or a clear resolution. The memoir's central theme of financial downfall, coupled with the author's perspective, often left readers feeling insulted or unable to empathize, leading to strong negative reactions.

Flat Broke with Two Goats is a polarizing memoir that elicits strong and often contradictory reactions from its readers. While some found it to be an inspirational account of resilience and a poignant exploration of marriage and the meaning of home, others viewed it as a frustrating tale of unaddressed privilege and financial irresponsibility. This book would likely appeal to readers interested in character-driven memoirs, particularly those focusing on a drastic lifestyle change and the challenges of adapting to rural or homesteading life. It may also resonate with individuals who appreciate detailed descriptions of animal care and a strong sense of place. However, readers seeking a clear narrative of personal growth, accountability, or conventional solutions to financial crises, or those who are easily frustrated by perceived self-indulgence, might find this memoir a challenging and potentially infuriating experience.
