Fourth wing

Violet Sorrengail, a young woman destined for the quiet, scholarly life of the Scribe Quadrant, finds her world violently upended by the iron will of her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail. Despite Violet's physical frailty, marked by chronic pain and brittle joints, her formidable mother commands her to join the deadly Riders Quadrant at Basgiath War College, a place where aspiring dragon riders either bond with a dragon or die trying. The odds are stacked against her; dragons incinerate the "fragile," and most cadets would readily eliminate rivals to increase their own chances of bonding.

The first challenge, the Parapet, sets a brutal tone. Violet must cross a treacherous bridge high above a canyon, a gauntlet that claims many lives before training even truly begins. Once inside the War College, she is thrust into the Fourth Wing, a unit commanded by Xaden Riorson. Xaden, a powerful and ruthless wingleader, bears a deep, personal vendetta against General Sorrengail for executing his rebel father. He sees Violet not as a person, but as the daughter of his enemy, a constant reminder of his loss, and a target.

Life at Basgiath is a relentless cycle of intense combat training and deadly trials. Violet, smaller and weaker than her peers, must rely on her sharp intellect and cunning, often employing her scribe's knowledge to survive. She endures constant physical challenges, facing down cadets who would kill her to improve their own standing. Her childhood best friend, Dain Aetos, a second-year rider, tries to protect her, but his overprotective nature often clashes with Violet's fierce determination to prove herself.

The pivotal event for any cadet is the Threshing, where dragons choose their riders. Against all expectations, Violet bonds with not one, but two dragons: Tairn, an enormous, ancient black morningstartail known for his ferocity and dry wit, and Andarna, a small, golden feathertail, a rare and juvenile dragon. This unprecedented dual bond makes Violet an immediate legend and a target, as it also inextricably links her to Xaden, for Tairn is mated to Sgaeyl, Xaden's fierce blue daggertail dragon. The bond between mated dragons extends to their riders, meaning Xaden now has a vested interest in Violet's survival, a fact that both frustrates and complicates their volatile relationship.

As the year progresses, Violet's skills grow, honed by the constant threat of death and the demanding expectations of Tairn. She discovers her unique signet, a powerful magical ability manifested through her bond with Tairn. Amidst the brutal training, a reluctant, undeniable attraction sparks between Violet and Xaden, fueled by their forced proximity and shared dangers. Their relationship blossoms amidst the simmering tension of their pasts and the ever-present threat of the war college.

However, the war outside Navarre's protective wards intensifies, with increasing attacks from the neighboring kingdom of Poromiel, who ride gryphons. The kingdom's wards begin to fail, and the death toll rises. Violet starts to suspect that the leadership, including her mother, is concealing a terrible secret. For their final challenge of the year, Violet, Xaden, and their squad are sent on a perilous mission. It is during this deployment that the full truth about Xaden's father's rebellion is unveiled, revealing a hidden war against a far more dangerous enemy: the venin, dark mages who drain the land and its creatures, and their wyvern.

Violet learns that the history she has been taught is a lie, manipulated to maintain power and conceal the true threat. The gryphon riders, long portrayed as enemies, are actually fighting the same dark forces. Faced with this devastating revelation, and witnessing the sacrifices made by those around her, Violet makes a choice. She joins the re-emerging revolution, aligning herself with Xaden and those who seek to expose the truth and fight the venin, forever changing her path from a reluctant cadet to a pivotal figure in a war far greater than she ever imagined.
