"Shiver" garners praise primarily for its distinctive writing style and evocative atmosphere. Many reviewers describe the prose as lyrical, beautiful, and poetic, commending the author's ability to create a strong sense of place and mood, particularly the pervasive feeling of cold. Readers who enjoyed the book often highlight the emotional depth of the central relationship, finding Grace and Sam's connection to be pure, powerful, and deeply moving. Sam, the male lead, is frequently noted for being a unique character - gentle, emotional, and respectful - which some found a refreshing departure from typical young adult male archetypes. The novel's unique take on werewolf lore, departing from traditional mythology, also resonated positively with a segment of its audience, contributing to an overall experience that some found satisfying and even capable of bringing them to tears.

However, the book also faces significant criticism, with many reviewers expressing extreme boredom due to its slow pacing and perceived lack of plot. A frequent point of contention is the central romance, which many found unconvincing, obsessive, or even unsettling, often described as "insta-love" or "creepy." Both main characters, Grace and Sam, are criticized for being one-dimensional, poorly characterized, or lacking empathy for anyone beyond their immediate relationship. Sam's internal monologue is often described as effeminate or sounding like an older woman, leading to issues with his characterization as a teenage boy. The writing, while praised by some, is also called out for being "purple prose," overly descriptive, or featuring "rubbish" poetry and song lyrics. Reviewers also noted numerous plot holes, illogical elements, and a strong, often unfavorable, resemblance to other popular paranormal romance series, particularly "Twilight."

Ultimately, "Shiver" appears to be a divisive read. Readers who appreciate lyrical prose, a strong emphasis on character emotion, and a unique, introspective approach to paranormal romance are most likely to enjoy this book. It appeals to those who prioritize a deep, all-consuming love story over a fast-paced plot or extensive action. Conversely, readers seeking a quick-moving narrative, complex character development, a more traditional or less intense romance, or those who are put off by "insta-love" tropes and perceived logical inconsistencies, may find "Shiver" to be a slow and unsatisfying experience.
