フルーツバスケット 4 [Fruits Basket 4]

The biting winter air does little to cool the animosity that crackles between Yuki and Kyo Sohma. With the new school term comes a mandatory endurance run, a marathon that forces their rivalry into the open. As always, they are a storm of insults and glares, a prince and a stray cat circling each other. Yuki, ever composed, chides Kyo for his recklessness, especially as a cold begins to weaken him. Kyo, bristling, sees only a challenge. He is determined to win, to finally wipe the smirk off the Rat's face, no matter the weather or the fever creeping into his bones.

Their race, however, is violently interrupted by the arrival of a boy with striking black-and-white hair. He moves with a languid grace, introducing himself as Hatsuharu Sohma. He has come for one reason: to fight Kyo. At first, he is calm, almost placid, but a switch flips within him. His eyes harden, and the air around him grows menacing. This is his other side, what the family calls “Black Haru,” an unstoppable force of pure aggression. He lunges, and the school grounds become a battlefield, the endurance run all but forgotten in the chaos of their clash.

In the midst of the brawl, Yuki's already fragile health gives way. His breath catches, his body trembles, and he collapses in a severe asthma attack, transforming into the small, gray rat. Haru, his fury instantly vanishing, gently scoops him up. Later, as Yuki rests, Haru shares a story with Tohru. He is the Ox of the Zodiac, and as a child, he was relentlessly mocked for being the “stupid” one tricked by the Rat in the old legend. He grew up hating Yuki, blaming him for the ridicule. But when he finally confronted him, Yuki was not the scheming trickster he'd imagined, but a quiet, lonely boy. “He was my first love, you know,” Haru admits, revealing a deep, complicated bond that lies beneath the surface of the Sohma family's curses.

As the seasons turn toward spring, Valentine's Day descends upon the school. Yuki's locker overflows with chocolates from his admirers, while Kyo wants nothing more than to disappear on a “long journey” to escape the fuss. His plans are thwarted by the whirlwind arrival of Kagura, the Boar, who is determined to have a Valentine's date with her beloved Kyo. The ever-mischievous Shigure suggests a double date: Kyo with Kagura, and Yuki with Tohru. The idea is met with explosive protests from Kyo, whose agitation seems to run deeper than simple annoyance.

Behind the veil of his playful demeanor, Shigure's intentions are far from simple. In a hushed, tense conversation, the family doctor, Hatori, accuses him of manipulating events, of using Tohru's gentle nature as a pawn in a larger game involving Akito, the mysterious head of the Sohma clan. “You and Akito are doing a fine job of using Honda-kun,” Hatori says, his voice laced with ice. Shigure does not deny it, speaking of a desperate, selfish desire to hold onto something precious, no matter who gets hurt in the process. His words hang in the air, revealing a darkness that Tohru has never suspected.

Later, Tohru finds Kyo alone on the school roof, his posture rigid with a pain he cannot name. She senses the immense pressure he feels, the obligation to hate Yuki that seems to protect something fragile within him. Instead of pushing him to change, she offers a quiet acceptance. “You know, you don't have to get along,” she tells him softly. “Even if you hate him… if that will ease your pain, then it's okay.” Her simple words seem to pierce through his armor, reaching a place of profound loneliness.

The favor is returned on White Day, when the cheerful, rabbit-like Momiji Sohma arrives with a gift for Tohru: a trip for them all to a Sohma-owned hot springs inn. Kyo immediately refuses to go, but Momiji tells a story that stills his anger. It is a tale called “The Most Foolish Traveler in the World,” about a kind man who gives away everything he owns - his clothes, his limbs, his very eyes - to tricksters, and with each loss, he weeps with gratitude for having had a gift to give. In the foolish traveler, Kyo sees a reflection of Tohru's boundless, selfless kindness, a purity that makes him feel ashamed. He quietly agrees to go.

The trip to the hot springs is a rare moment of peace. They soak in the steaming water, play spirited games of ping-pong, and meet the inn's proprietress, another Sohma member who was once wary of an outsider knowing their secret but is now relieved it is someone like Tohru. As they prepare to leave, Yuki gives Tohru a simple blue ribbon, a small token of gratitude that feels heavier than it looks. It is a brief, warm truce in their chaotic lives, a shared memory under the clear mountain sky.

But the quiet cannot last. Back at school, just as one chapter seems to be closing, another opens. Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo are stunned to find two new students waiting for them, ready to start the new school year alongside them. It is Hatsuharu and Momiji, their Zodiac spirits and their complicated histories now intertwined with their daily high school life. It seems the circle is only getting wider, and their world more beautifully, terribly crowded.
