One morning, with his mother off to town and his father busy on the farm, George was tasked with administering Grandma's foul-smelling dose. But a spark of rebellion, fueled by her incessant nastiness, ignited within him. Why give her the same old bitter concoction when he could create something truly marvelous? Something that might, just might, make her a nicer person.
With a glint in his eye, George embarked on his grand experiment. He scoured the house, gathering every curious liquid and powder he could find. From the bathroom came shampoo, hair remover, and tooth powder; from the laundry room, floor polish and washing-up liquid. The kitchen yielded horseradish sauce, gin, and engine oil. He even added brown paint to make the color just right. Into a giant saucepan they all went, stirred with a broom handle, and brought to a bubbling boil, creating a steaming, potent brew unlike any medicine known to man.
When the time came, George poured his magnificent concoction into Grandma's usual medicine bottle. With a triumphant (and slightly nervous) heart, he presented it to her. She, ever suspicious, grumbled and complained, but ultimately swallowed the entire dose. The effect was immediate and astonishing. Grandma began to grow, and grow, and grow! Her head burst through the ceiling, then through the roof, until she was a colossal figure, glaring down at the farm from an impossible height. The house groaned and creaked, and chaos reigned.
Just then, his parents returned home. Mr. Kranky, a man always on the lookout for a grand idea, was utterly captivated by the sight of his enormous mother-in-law. His farmer's mind immediately grasped the commercial possibilities: giant cows, giant pigs, giant chickens! Imagine the profits! He urged George to recreate the medicine, dreaming of a world where no one would ever go hungry again, and the Kranky family would be rich and famous. Mrs. Kranky, though initially horrified, found herself swayed by the prospect of such prosperity.
But George, in his haste and excitement, had not written down the recipe. Each subsequent attempt to recreate the "marvelous medicine" yielded wildly different, and often hilarious, results. One batch made a chicken's legs grow impossibly long, another caused only its neck to stretch to absurd lengths. The farm animals became a parade of peculiar proportions, a testament to George's inconsistent alchemy.
Then came the fourth batch, a shrinking potion. Unaware of its new property, and still grumbling about being ignored, Grandma snatched a cup, mistaking it for tea. She drank it down in one gulp. The colossal woman began to shrink, rapidly, until she was no bigger than a doll, then a mouse, then a speck. In a blink, she vanished completely, leaving behind only the memory of her mean-spirited reign.
Mrs. Kranky, after an initial moment of shock, found herself feeling a strange sense of relief, realizing that life without her cantankerous mother might actually be for the best. Mr. Kranky, though disappointed about the loss of his giant-animal empire, could not deny the newfound peace. And George, the boy who dared to challenge the ordinary, felt a shiver of wonder, knowing he had touched the very edge of magic.

Rating Sources
Reviewers frequently praise the book as a creative, captivating, and unique story that demonstrates Roald Dahl's genius for children's literature. Many found it to be a fun, absurd, and often hilarious read, with some enjoying it as a nostalgic re-read from childhood. The book is lauded for its universal appeal, with many asserting that it can be enjoyed by readers of all ages, not just children. Quentin Blake's illustrations are often highlighted as a perfect complement to the imaginative narrative. Readers appreciate the story's theme of a child standing up to oppressive adults and finding a way to get their own back in a mischievous and often delightful manner.
Despite its fans, the book garners significant criticism, primarily concerning its appropriateness for young children and its perceived moral implications. Some reviewers describe the main character's actions as "monstrous" or "psychopathic," expressing concern that the story might inspire children to dangerous experimentation with household items or foster negative attitudes towards older relatives. The language used by some characters is also cited as a negative, with instances of harsh dialogue deemed unsuitable for a children's book. A few critics found the plot to be flat, uninteresting, or too focused on listing ingredients, suggesting it doesn't reach the same "marvellous" storytelling heights as other Dahl classics. The ending is also described by some as abrupt or less satisfying than other works by the author.
Overall, "George's Marvellous Medicine" emerges as a divisive but characteristically Roald Dahl book. While it delights many with its dark humor, imaginative premise, and themes of child empowerment against tyranny, it equally raises concerns about its suitability for very young or impressionable readers due to its content and implied messages. It is recommended for readers who appreciate Dahl's signature style of blending the whimsical with the wicked, enjoy stories where children outsmart adults, and are not put off by unconventional or potentially controversial themes. Parents considering this book for their children may want to review the content themselves, as reactions vary widely regarding its appropriateness and moral lessons.
