Michael Lewis's latest work is widely praised for his signature storytelling prowess, with many readers finding his prose clear, engaging, and masterful at making complex financial topics understandable. Reviewers highlighted the book's ability to offer a fascinating, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the subject's unusual personality, childhood, and the origins of his ventures, including Alameda Research and FTX. The narrative is described as an intriguing psychological portrait, filling in many missing pieces about the individual's transition into finance and the role of concepts like Effective Altruism. Readers appreciated the book's readability and its ability to cover elements of high-frequency trading, cryptocurrencies, philanthropy, bankruptcy, and the justice system in an accessible and often captivating manner.

However, a significant number of reviews express concern over the book's perceived lack of objectivity and balance. Many felt that Lewis became too close to his subject, leading to a narrative that largely supports the individual's claims, overlooks critical red flags, and omits context that would present a different picture. Critics suggest Lewis was "duped" or overly sympathetic, presenting an "infantilizing hagiography" that downplays allegations of fraud in favor of portraying mere incompetence or eccentricity. The book is also criticized for feeling incomplete and rushed, published before the full legal fallout of the situation, and for failing to provide a clear "so what" or deeper insight into the motivations behind the events. Some found the character development flat and the overall portrayal misleading for those unfamiliar with the broader saga.

In conclusion, Michael Lewis's book is an engaging character study, marked by his renowned narrative style and ability to simplify intricate financial concepts. It offers a unique, if highly debated, perspective on a controversial figure and the early days of a rapidly evolving industry. While readers who appreciate Lewis's writing regardless of the subject, or those seeking a specific, personal account of the individual's journey, may find it a compelling read, those looking for an objective, comprehensive, or critically analytical account of the financial collapse and alleged fraud may find it falls short. It is best suited for readers interested in an unconventional character portrait and the mechanics of cryptocurrency trading, rather than a definitive journalistic exposé.
