In a great green room, a little bunny lay tucked snugly in his bed. The world outside was beginning to dim, but inside, the room glowed with a soft, familiar light. All around him were the things he knew best, each one waiting for its turn in the quiet ritual of evening.

With a gentle sigh, the little bunny began his goodnights. "Goodnight room," he whispered, his gaze sweeping over the cozy space. "Goodnight moon," he added, looking towards the window where the night sky was deepening. The air itself seemed to settle, hushed and still.

He looked across to the picture on the wall, where a cow, impossibly, was jumping over the moon. "Goodnight cow jumping over the moon." And beside it, the charming scene of "Goodnight three little bears sitting on chairs." His eyes moved to the small, everyday items that filled his world: "Goodnight two little kittens," he murmured, imagining their soft fur, "and goodnight mittens."

The rhythmic litany continued, a soothing cadence in the growing dusk. "Goodnight clocks and goodnight socks." He saw the little toy house, standing silent and still, and the tiny mouse, peeking from its hidden spot. "Goodnight little house, and goodnight mouse." Even the sustenance of the day received its farewell: "Goodnight comb, and goodnight brush. Goodnight nobody."

As the room grew darker, the colors softening into shades of twilight green, a quiet old lady, ever watchful in her chair, whispered a soft "hush." The little bunny's voice grew sleepier with each passing goodnight, the familiar objects around him becoming comforting anchors in the vastness of the coming night.

At last, with everything acknowledged, everything settled into its place, the little bunny offered one final, all-encompassing farewell. "Goodnight stars. Goodnight air. Goodnight noises everywhere." And as the moon outside shone bright and full, the great green room, now truly dark, embraced the peaceful slumber of the little bunny, ready for dreams to begin.

What other readers say

Liked

The reviews for this book frequently highlight its success as a calming and enchanting read, particularly cherished as a bedtime ritual. Many readers describe it as a delightful, peaceful, and soporific book that helps young children relax and fall asleep. Its gentle, repetitive text and charming illustrations, which often feature a mix of bright colors and monochrome, are praised for creating a reassuring atmosphere. It is widely considered a timeless classic, a treasured gift, and a staple for early childhood, with some parents noting its effectiveness in helping children overcome fear of the dark or separation anxiety by acknowledging familiar objects.

Disliked

However, the book also garners significant criticism, especially from some adult readers. A common point of contention is the quality of its rhyming and rhythm, with some describing it as simplistic, inconsistent, or even "lame." The illustrations, while appreciated by many, are occasionally called "garish" by others. Some adult interpretations delve into much darker themes, viewing the narrative as chilling, nihilistic, or even suggestive of obsessive-compulsive tendencies or a deep sense of existential emptiness. There are also questions raised about the book's narrative coherence, character motivations, and the perceived randomness of the objects listed. A notable historical point of discussion is the book's surprising appearance on a banned books list, stemming from a minor detail in the illustrations rather than the text itself.

In short

Despite the widely varied adult interpretations and criticisms, the consensus points to this book as a highly effective and beloved classic for its intended audience. It is best suited for very young children, such as toddlers and preschoolers, and their parents who are seeking a gentle, repetitive, and familiar story to incorporate into a bedtime routine. While some adults may not personally connect with its simple charm or may find deeper, sometimes unsettling, meanings, its enduring popularity with generations of children as a soothing end to the day remains undeniable.
