Reviewers widely praise this memoir for its exceptional honesty and raw vulnerability, with many describing it as a courageous and powerful act of self-revelation. The author is commended for laying bare her deeply personal experiences, which resonated profoundly with many readers and fostered a strong sense of empathy. The book is lauded for its groundbreaking approach to discussing body image, particularly its unique exploration of how profound trauma can manifest physically and shape one's relationship with their body. Beyond its personal scope, the memoir is seen as an important commentary on broader societal issues such as body shaming, racism, and the complexities of the fat acceptance movement. Many highlight the author's eloquent and incisive writing style, which, despite the difficult subject matter, is described as stunning and deeply affecting, making it a memorable and thought-provoking read.

Despite its strengths, some readers found the book to be repetitive and circular in its narrative, with certain themes and phrases recurring frequently. A segment of reviewers felt the language could be dull or informal, likening the style to blog entries rather than a polished memoir, and suggested that the author sometimes wrote around her true sentiments. While acknowledging the underlying pain, some critics perceived a strange unemotional tone that prevented them from fully connecting with the narrative. Other points of contention included the book's heavily inward-directed focus, which some felt only broadened its scope near the conclusion, and a perceived lack of new insights into the politics of obesity. Additionally, a few reviewers expressed dissatisfaction with the author's portrayal of medical professionals, finding her criticisms of doctors' health-related advice to be whiny or to misunderstand their intentions. Some also felt the author was not entirely ready to articulate her feelings on the central themes, leading to a sense of contradiction.

Ultimately, this memoir is widely considered an important and necessary, albeit often difficult, read that demands attention. It is recommended for those who appreciate authentic and unflinching vulnerability in storytelling, particularly readers interested in the profound impacts of trauma, the complexities of body image, and critical examinations of societal perceptions and biases. While its unique style and raw honesty may not appeal to all, particularly those seeking a traditional narrative or a clear success story, it offers a powerful opportunity for self-reflection and fosters greater empathy. Fans of the author's previous non-fiction work and those looking for a challenging, thought-provoking exploration of personal experience intertwined with broader cultural issues are most likely to find this book deeply impactful.
