The air of England hummed with disquiet, despite the grand pageantry of the Field of the Cloth of Gold, where King Henry VIII and the King of France had met in dazzling splendor. Whispers of resentment against Cardinal Wolsey, the King's chief advisor, grew louder among the nobility, who saw his hand in every costly display and perceived his ambition as boundless. The Duke of Buckingham, in particular, chafed under Wolsey's soaring power, openly voicing his disdain for the common-born cardinal. But before Buckingham could act on his grievances, the swift hand of Wolsey moved first, and the Duke found himself arrested on charges of high treason, his pleas of innocence falling on deaf ears.

Queen Katharine, a woman of grace and dignity, sought to intercede for Buckingham, but her pleas were in vain. The Duke was condemned and led to his execution, his final words a sorrowful acceptance of fate. Yet, even as one noble fell, the court's attention began to shift, stirred by a deeper, more personal turmoil within the King himself. Henry, restless and without a male heir to secure his lineage, began to question the validity of his long marriage to Katharine, who had first been wed to his deceased brother, Prince Arthur. He sought counsel, and the notion that his union was unlawful, a curse in the eyes of Heaven, took root in his mind.

Amidst this growing doubt, a new face captivated the King's eye: Anne Bullen, a lady-in-waiting to the Queen, whose charm and wit began to eclipse all others. Cardinal Wolsey, ever watchful, sensed the shift in the King's affections and, believing he could orchestrate a new royal alliance to further his own international standing, encouraged Henry's pursuit of an annulment from Katharine. A great trial was convened, a stage for the unraveling of a royal marriage. Queen Katharine, though isolated and distressed, stood firm, refusing to submit to the court's judgment. She appealed directly to the King, her voice ringing with conviction, and openly accused Wolsey of instigating Henry's desire for divorce, her spirit unbroken even in the face of such public humiliation.

Wolsey's star, however, had begun its precipitous descent. His machinations and vast personal wealth, amassed through the King's favor, became undeniable. Letters intended for the Pope, urging a delay in Henry's divorce proceedings, accidentally fell into the King's hands, exposing Wolsey's duplicity and his secret ambition for a French alliance, rather than Henry's true desire for Anne. The King, feeling betrayed, stripped Wolsey of his titles and possessions. The once-mighty Cardinal, now utterly disgraced, journeyed towards Leicester Abbey, where, broken and ill, he lamented his failure to serve God with the same devotion he had shown his earthly King, and there he died.

With Wolsey gone, the path was cleared. Henry secretly married Anne Bullen, and soon after, she was crowned Queen in a lavish ceremony that filled the streets of London with cheering crowds, though not all hearts rejoiced. Meanwhile, the ailing Queen Katharine, now stripped of her royal title and living in seclusion, received news of Wolsey's death. Though she had once condemned him, she found forgiveness in her heart, and with a vision of celestial spirits ushering her forth, she too passed away, maintaining her loyalty to Henry to her last breath.

New figures rose to prominence in the reshaped court. Thomas Cranmer, a scholar favored by the King, was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. Yet, his elevation brought him enemies, particularly Stephen Gardiner, who plotted against him, accusing him of heresy. But Henry, now keenly aware of the treachery that could fester in his court, defended Cranmer, presenting him with his own ring as a token of protection and faith, silencing his accusers.

The nation then awaited a new hope, and it arrived in the form of a daughter, Princess Elizabeth, born to Queen Anne. At her christening, Archbishop Cranmer delivered a powerful prophecy, foretelling a glorious and peaceful reign for the infant princess, a golden age for England under her wise rule, bringing the tumultuous era to a hopeful close.

What other readers say

Liked

Reviewers generally praise Henry VIII for its remarkable poetic language and powerful dramatic speeches. Many highlight the eloquence and dignity of Queen Katherine of Aragon, particularly in her scenes of self-defense, finding her to be the most compelling and sympathetic character. Cardinal Wolsey's downfall and his subsequent soliloquies are also frequently cited as moments of profound beauty and character depth. The play is appreciated for its grandeur, pageantry, and the vivid imagery present in its verse, with some critics noting specific scenes, such as the initial meeting of Henry and Anne, as particularly brilliant. For some, the play offers interesting insights into historical and political intrigue, exploring themes of ambition, power, and betrayal with effective language.

Disliked

However, many reviewers find the play structurally flawed and often underwhelming. A common criticism is the lack of a strong central character, with King Henry VIII himself frequently described as inconsistent, underdeveloped, or simply uninteresting. The plot is often seen as episodic, lacking coherence, and failing to build to a satisfying dramatic conclusion, with the final act often considered the weakest. Numerous critics view the play as a piece of Tudor propaganda, designed to celebrate the monarchy and the Anglican Church, leading to a sanitized and selective portrayal of history that omits many of the more dramatic and historically significant events of Henry VIII's reign. This perceived historical whitewashing and the absence of deeper dramatic conflict contribute to a sense of boredom and a feeling that the play is "phoned-in" or lacks the complexity of Shakespeare's other works.

In short

Overall, Henry VIII receives a mixed reception, often considered one of Shakespeare's lesser plays due to its structural issues and perceived propagandistic nature. Despite these criticisms, it is recommended for dedicated Shakespeare enthusiasts, particularly those aiming to read his complete works, or for readers interested in early modern historical perspectives and the collaboration between Shakespeare and John Fletcher. The play is often seen to benefit from historical context or a strong performance, and readers who appreciate poetic language and strong individual scenes, especially those featuring Katherine or Wolsey, may find enjoyment even if the overall narrative struggles to cohere.
