Hobbit albo Tam i z powrotem

In a hole in the ground lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. Bilbo Baggins, a most respectable and content hobbit, loved his quiet life in Bag End, filled with good food and familiar routines. His tranquility, however, was destined to be shattered by the arrival of the wizard Gandalf and a company of thirteen boisterous dwarves.

The dwarves, led by the proud Thorin Oakenshield, had a grand, perilous quest: to reclaim their ancestral home, the Lonely Mountain, and its vast treasure from the fearsome dragon, Smaug. Much to Bilbo's dismay and initial terror, Gandalf had chosen him to be their "burglar." Though he fainted at the very thought of adventure, a spark of the Tookish side of his family, known for its adventurous spirit, flickered within him, and he reluctantly found himself swept away from his comfortable hobbit-hole and into the wide, dangerous world.

Their journey began with misadventures, including a close call with three dim-witted trolls who intended to make supper of them, only to be turned to stone by the rising sun, thanks to Gandalf's cunning. They found respite and wisdom in the Last Homely House of Rivendell, among the elves, before pressing onward into the Misty Mountains. There, a sudden storm and a goblin ambush forced them into the dark depths of the mountains, leading Bilbo to a fateful encounter. Separated from his companions, he stumbled upon a mysterious ring and, more importantly, engaged in a life-or-death riddle game with the creature Gollum. It was during this tense exchange that Bilbo first used the ring, discovering its power of invisibility, a trick that allowed him to escape Gollum and eventually rejoin the dwarves.

The path grew ever more perilous. They navigated the dark, enchanted forest of Mirkwood, where Gandalf left them to attend to other pressing matters. Here, Bilbo truly began to discover his own courage, rescuing the dwarves from giant spiders with his newly named sword, Sting, and later orchestrating their ingenious escape from the Wood-elves' captivity by floating downriver in barrels. This series of trials transformed the once timid hobbit into a resourceful and brave individual, proving Gandalf's initial faith in him.

Finally, they reached the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo, with his newfound stealth and wits, was instrumental in their plan. He crept into Smaug's lair, a vast cavern filled with glittering treasure and the slumbering dragon himself. Through cunning conversation, Bilbo discovered a vulnerable spot on Smaug's scaly underbelly, a detail he later relayed to a watchful thrush. When Smaug, enraged by the theft of a single cup, unleashed his fiery wrath upon Lake-town, it was Bard the Bowman, guided by the thrush's knowledge, who shot the black arrow that brought the magnificent dragon crashing down, ending his reign of terror.

With Smaug vanquished, the mountain's treasure became the focus of intense desire. Thorin, consumed by the "dragon-sickness" and his ancestral claim, refused to share the wealth, leading to a tense standoff with the Men of Lake-town and the Elves of Mirkwood, who sought compensation for their losses. Bilbo, distraught by the impending conflict, attempted to broker peace by secretly giving the Arkenstone, a priceless dwarven jewel, to Bard and the Elvenking. This act of selflessness, though initially angering Thorin, highlighted Bilbo's moral growth. The conflict escalated into the Battle of Five Armies, a brutal clash involving dwarves, elves, men, goblins, and wargs.

In the chaos of battle, Thorin was mortally wounded, but not before reconciling with Bilbo, recognizing the hobbit's true worth. The forces of good, aided by the timely arrival of the Eagles and Beorn, ultimately triumphed. With the quest fulfilled and peace restored, Bilbo, laden with a modest share of treasure, began his long journey home. He returned to Bag End a changed hobbit, richer not just in gold, but in experience, courage, and a profound understanding of the world beyond his garden gate, though he found his own belongings being auctioned off, having been presumed dead. He had gone "there and back again," forever altered by the unexpected adventure.
