There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. There is only a vast, flat wasteland, baked by a relentless sun, where the temperature hovers around ninety-five degrees in the shade - if you can find any. Out on the dry lakebed, rattlesnakes and scorpions lurk under rocks, but the worst thing you can find is a yellow-spotted lizard. If one bites you, you will die a slow and painful death. Always. To this desolate camp for “bad boys,” Stanley Yelnats is sent, given a choice between jail and this hellscape. He is innocent of the crime he was convicted of, but his family has always been in the wrong place at the wrong time, a misfortune they blame on his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.

Each day, Stanley and the other boys of Group D - boys with names like X-Ray, Armpit, and Zero - are marched out onto the lake to dig a hole, five feet deep and five feet across. The work is grueling, a relentless cycle of plunging a shovel into the hard earth under the watchful eye of the menacing Mr. Sir and the deceptively cheerful Mr. Pendanski. Stanley's hands, once soft, become a geography of blisters and calluses. He learns the rhythms of survival and the unspoken social order of the group, where X-Ray, the smallest boy, is the undisputed leader. They are told the digging builds character, but Stanley soon suspects they are looking for something.

The weight of the past hangs over the dry lake like the heat itself. Generations ago, Stanley's ancestor, Elya Yelnats, broke a promise to an old woman named Madame Zeroni, who cursed him and his descendants to an eternity of bad luck. One day, while digging, Stanley unearths a small gold tube engraved with the initials KB. Knowing it is important, but needing to survive, he gives it to X-Ray, who claims credit. The discovery brings the Warden, a tall, red-haired woman with venom-laced nail polish, who becomes obsessed with the find. She orders the boys to dig feverishly in the spot where X-Ray claimed to have found it, turning the area into a chaotic maze of trenches.

As the digging intensifies, another story unfolds, that of Green Lake a hundred and ten years ago, when the lake was full and the shore was lined with blooming peach trees. It was the home of Katherine Barlow, a beloved schoolteacher famous for her spiced peaches. She fell in love with Sam, the onion man, who fixed the leaky schoolhouse roof in exchange for her preserves. But their love was forbidden - she was white, and he was Black. After they were seen kissing, a mob burned the schoolhouse and murdered Sam. Consumed by grief, Katherine Barlow became Kissin' Kate Barlow, one of the most feared outlaws in the West, leaving her lipstick print on the men she killed.

A fragile alliance forms between Stanley and the silent, withdrawn boy everyone calls Zero. Stanley begins teaching Zero to read, and in return, Zero helps dig Stanley's hole. The arrangement earns them the scorn of the other boys, leading to a brutal fight that culminates in Zero striking Mr. Pendanski with a shovel and walking off into the wasteland. "He's going to have to come back for water," the Warden says calmly. Wracked with guilt, Stanley waits for days, but Zero does not return. Finally, Stanley runs away himself, stealing the water truck and promptly driving it into a hole.

With nothing but an empty canteen, Stanley walks into the desert, following the ghost of a story his great-grandfather told of finding “refuge on God's thumb.” He finds Zero near death, taking shelter under the wreckage of a boat named *Mary Lou* - Sam's old boat. Zero has survived on jars of hundred-year-old spiced peaches he calls “sploosh.” Their journey continues toward a distant, thumb-shaped mountain. On the grueling ascent, Zero confesses that it was he who stole the famous sneakers that Stanley was convicted for. The curse, it seems, has woven their fates together.

Exhausted, Stanley carries the unconscious Zero the rest of the way up the mountain. There, on God's thumb, they find a field of wild onions and a small spring of muddy water - the same onions and water that saved Stanley's great-grandfather a century before. By carrying the descendant of Madame Zeroni up the mountain and singing the pig lullaby to him, Stanley unwittingly breaks the family curse. They regain their strength, living on onions and water, their bond solidifying into a deep friendship.

With a shared sense of destiny, they return to Camp Green Lake under the cover of darkness. They have one more hole to dig: the one where Stanley truly found the lipstick tube. Working silently, they unearth a metal suitcase. Just as they pull it from the ground, a flashlight beam blinds them. The Warden, flanked by her counselors, has found them. "Thank you," she says. "You boys have been a big help."

As she moves to claim her prize, Stanley sees that the hole is a nest of deadly yellow-spotted lizards, which begin crawling all over him and Zero. The boys freeze, knowing any movement means death. But the lizards do not bite. They are not hungry; they have been eating onions. At dawn, a car appears, carrying a lawyer and the Attorney General. They have come to release Stanley, his name having been cleared. A standoff ensues, but the suitcase provides the final, stunning revelation: engraved on its side is the name STANLEY YELNATS. It is his inheritance, lost when Kissin' Kate Barlow robbed his great-grandfather. The Warden's claim collapses, and as Stanley and Zero leave Camp Green Lake forever, the first drop of rain in over a hundred years falls onto the barren ground.
