Housekeeping A Novel

Reviewers widely praise the book's exquisite, beautiful, and often breathtaking prose, describing it as stunning, rich, and lyrical. Many found the writing to be out of this world, enchanting, and a revelation, elevating the reading experience to something profound and thought-provoking. The novel is lauded for its atmospheric and ethereal quality, creating a haunting sense of place, particularly in its depiction of the small, isolated town and its surrounding landscape. Readers are drawn to its deep exploration of universal themes such as loss, abandonment, loneliness, transience, identity, and the various strategies people employ for survival. Despite its often somber subject matter, the book is admired for handling tragic elements with subtlety, avoiding melodrama, and presenting a unique perspective on human existence. Its unconventional characters are often cited as memorable, contributing to the book's distinctive charm and literary merit.

However, the book's slow pace and minimal plot development are frequently mentioned as significant drawbacks. Some reviewers found the narrative drive lacking, describing it as a "limp tale" or a "slog" that could induce drowsiness. The prose, while often beautiful, is also criticized by some for being dense, convoluted, overwrought, or occasionally pretentious, with "writerly" passages that felt forced or clunky. This perceived "literary showboating" sometimes made the book difficult to comprehend or led to a feeling of emotional detachment. Characterization also proved divisive, with some readers finding the protagonist, Ruthie, to be a dull or remote narrator whose philosophical musings felt unconvincing for her age. The characters were sometimes seen as fitting into overly neat categories, making it hard for some to connect with their experiences or understand their motivations, leading to a sense of emptiness or uninvolvement. For these readers, the ending could feel flat, unsatisfying, or ambiguous, leaving them with a handful of images rather than a coherent message.

Ultimately, Housekeeping is a highly acclaimed work of literary fiction, often described as a modern classic, though it elicits strong and varied reactions. It is a book that demands patience and a willingness to immerse oneself in its unique atmosphere and language. Readers who prioritize exceptional, lyrical prose and a deep, introspective exploration of complex themes like loss, identity, and unconventional living will likely find it to be a rewarding and haunting experience. It particularly appeals to those who appreciate character-driven narratives, even if the characters are remote or challenging, and who are comfortable with ambiguity rather than requiring clear resolutions. However, those seeking a fast-paced plot, straightforward narrative, or easily relatable characters may find it a difficult or even frustrating read.
