This graphic novel adaptation of the popular "I Survived" series has been widely praised for its ability to introduce historical events to a broad range of young readers, particularly those who gravitate towards the graphic novel format. Reviewers highlight its brilliance in combining educational content with engaging visuals, making history accessible and exciting for reluctant or struggling readers. The story itself is described as well-written, fast-paced, and thrilling, with many appreciating how the protagonist's emotions feel real and how the narrative brings the historical setting to life. The artwork is generally lauded for its quality, detail, and ability to convey the ship's appearance and the mood of the story, with some calling the illustrations gorgeous and the framing breathtaking. Many commend the book for effectively teaching history, providing valuable facts at the end, and sparking important conversations about historical events and societal issues like class differences.

While largely positive, some reviewers noted a few areas for improvement or expressed mixed feelings. A recurring comment was the story's lack of originality, with several reviewers pointing out its close parallels to well-known cinematic depictions of the Titanic disaster. Some found the drama to be amplified more than necessary, incorporating elements that felt overly dramatic for the narrative. Additionally, a few reviewers felt the graphic novel format, while engaging, might lead to a story that is "lacking in density" compared to its original chapter book counterpart. There were also isolated comments about the illustrations, with one reviewer expressing a personal preference against them, and another finding some scenes "a little too violent" given the visual nature of the graphic novel, prompting suggestions for parental guidance for very young readers.

Overall, "I Survived: The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912: Graphic Novel" is considered a highly successful and valuable addition to children's historical fiction. It comes highly recommended for middle-grade readers, specifically those aged 8-12, and is deemed an essential purchase for school and public libraries.
