Il caos da cui veniamo

Reviewers widely praise this book for its exceptional and poetic writing, often describing it as lyrical, mesmerizing, and stunningly beautiful. Many found the storytelling to be deeply absorbing and unforgettable, with some calling it a "masterpiece" and a potential "classic." The characters, particularly Betty and her father, Landon, are frequently highlighted as incredibly well-developed, authentic, and endearing, fostering a strong emotional connection with readers. The narrative is lauded for its powerful depiction of family bonds, tenderness, and resilience in the face of immense hardship, often evoking profound emotional responses from readers, including tears and a lasting impression. The book is also commended for its honest and vivid portrayal of Appalachian life and Cherokee heritage.

However, the reviews consistently warn that this is a profoundly difficult and often brutal read. Many describe it as heartbreaking, painful, and deeply disturbing, with some finding it almost unbearable due to its relentless depiction of tragedy and cruelty. Common content warnings include themes of racism, poverty, child abuse, sexual abuse, incest, animal cruelty, mental health struggles, suicide, and homophobia. While some found the poetic language captivating, a few critics felt it could occasionally be overwrought or "twee," especially in the beginning, and some events were perceived as "over-the-top" or unrealistic. A small number of reviewers found certain elements, particularly animal cruelty, to be gratuitous or felt the narrative occasionally veered into "misery porn."

Overall, despite its challenging and often devastating content, the book is widely regarded as a profound and unforgettable literary experience that balances its ugliness with moments of beauty and hope. It is highly recommended for readers who appreciate deeply emotional, character-driven family sagas and literary fiction with a poetic style. This book is best suited for those prepared to engage with a raw and unflinching exploration of trauma, resilience, and complex human nature, but it is not recommended for emotionally vulnerable readers or those who prefer lighter narratives.
