Many found it a compelling and well-researched account that uncovers previously unknown details about events within the Vatican, particularly concerning alleged corruption and financial irregularities. Reviewers highlight the book's success in shedding light on the character of Pope John Paul I as a reform-minded leader who sought to address significant issues within the church.

Despite its strengths, some readers found the book to be dense, with a significant amount of detailed information that could be challenging to follow at times, particularly regarding intricate financial transactions and power dynamics. A few reviewers felt that the author's admiration for Pope John Paul I was overly emphasized, potentially impacting objectivity, and that certain sections detailing banking schemes were dry or overlong. Additionally, one reviewer mentioned a perceived personal bias against Pope John Paul II.

In conclusion, the book is widely regarded as a gripping and thought-provoking investigation that presents a plausible and disturbing case for foul play surrounding the death of Pope John Paul I.
