The game is far from over. After inheriting the fortune of billionaire Tobias Hawthorne, Avery Grambs is left with more questions than answers. The primary puzzle remains: why her? As she grapples with her new life in a mansion filled with secrets and riddles, a new hunt begins, this time for a mysterious man who might be the key to unlocking the entire Hawthorne legacy. The closer Avery gets to the truth, however, the more danger she finds herself in, as powerful enemies emerge who will stop at nothing to see her removed from the picture.
Navigating this treacherous world requires an alliance with the four Hawthorne grandsons, particularly the magnetic and enigmatic Jameson and Grayson, who continue to pull her in different directions. With every secret passage explored and every coded message deciphered, Avery uncovers a web of family secrets more complex than she ever imagined. This fast-paced continuation of the story is a journey into the heart of a cryptic dynasty, where every revelation leads to another puzzle and the greatest risk might be trusting the wrong person.

What other readers say
Liked
The book is widely praised for its engaging and unpredictable mystery, with many readers finding the riddles and puzzles to be both entertaining and addictive. Reviewers frequently highlighted the clever and complex plot twists, which kept them on their toes and eagerly turning pages, often leading to genuine surprise. The author's writing style is consistently lauded as immaculate, making the book an easy and enjoyable read that some found even better than its predecessor. Additionally, the character development for the protagonist, Avery, was appreciated by many, and the supporting cast, including the various Hawthorne brothers and other allies, added depth and often humor to the story.
Disliked
However, the book also drew significant criticism, with some reviewers feeling that the plot became overly convoluted rather than genuinely clever, leading to a sense of "filler" that primarily served to set up the next installment. Many found the pacing to be slow in the first half, with too much exposition and not enough substantial plot progression until the final chapters, where twists were often perceived as rushed, messy, or even predictable. The romance, particularly the love triangle, was a major point of contention; some found it unnecessary, cringe-worthy, and detrimental to the overall narrative, feeling that the protagonist was indecisive and that the romantic connections lacked conviction compared to the first book. Characters, including Avery and one of the main love interests, were occasionally described as annoying or lacking complexity, and some felt beloved side characters were sidelined.
In short
Ultimately, this sequel proves to be a polarizing read, with some declaring it an improvement and others a significant disappointment. It continues the intricate mystery and romantic tension established in the first book, offering a wild ride for those who embrace its complexities. This book is best suited for readers who thoroughly enjoyed the unique blend of riddles, family secrets, and dramatic character dynamics from the first installment and are eager for more, even if it means a slower build-up to the grand finale. It will appeal to fans of fast-paced young adult mysteries who appreciate a strong focus on puzzles and a compelling, albeit at times divisive, romantic subplot.
