Insel der blauen Delfine. CD. ( Ab 8 J.)

The book is widely praised as a timeless and excellent work, particularly for children and middle-grade readers. Many reviewers describe it as perfect, heartwarming, and unforgettable, highlighting its powerful message about survival, resilience, and a deep love for nature and animals. Readers commend the protagonist, Karana, for her courage, wit, and strong character development, finding her inspiring in her ability to adapt and fend for herself in challenging circumstances. The narrative is noted for being easy to read, yet it provokes thoughtful conversations about difficult situations and life choices. Its basis in a true story adds another layer of fascination, and many cherish it as a beloved childhood classic that continues to resonate with them into adulthood, often evoking strong emotional connections and a sense of nostalgia.

Despite its many admirers, some readers found the book to be underwhelming, describing parts of it as monotonous or plodding. Criticisms include a perceived lack of detailed descriptions, particularly regarding certain events or the resolution of minor plot points, and a rapid pacing that skips over years in brief sentences. A few reviewers felt that character development and dialogue were minimal, leading to a narrative that sometimes lacked a strong sense of urgency or motive for the protagonist's actions. Concerns were also raised about the frequency of animal death, which some found distressing, and certain outdated terminologies used in the text. Academic reviews of a specific edition also pointed out potential issues with the depiction of indigenous peoples and the use of an artificially constructed language for the protagonist, suggesting the book can be a vehicle for discussion on these topics.

Ultimately, the book stands as a cherished classic, particularly recommended for middle-grade readers and as a read-aloud for younger children. It is ideal for those who appreciate survival stories, strong female protagonists, and narratives that emphasize a deep connection to the natural world. Readers who enjoy reflective, character-driven tales over fast-paced action will find much to love. While it may not appeal to all adult readers encountering it for the first time, its enduring themes of resilience, self-reliance, and the bond between humans and animals make it a valuable and inspiring read for anyone looking for a story with significant emotional depth and important life lessons.
