Ion Or On the Iliad

Plato's Ion is widely praised as a delightful and accessible introduction to his philosophical dialogues, particularly for those new to his works. Reviewers appreciate its brevity, making it a quick and engaging read that still manages to delve into profound themes. The dialogue is celebrated for its playful tone and the sharp Socratic irony, which many find entertaining. Its central exploration of artistic and poetic inspiration, and the distinction between true knowledge and divine influence, is consistently highlighted as thought-provoking and relevant to discussions about the arts even today. The vivid imagery, such as the magnet analogy used to illustrate the chain of inspiration from the Muses to the audience, is frequently noted for its clarity and impact.

However, the dialogue also draws significant criticism, primarily directed at the characters and the philosophical arguments presented. Many readers find Socrates's relentless questioning to be abrasive, labeling him as overbearing, a "know-it-all," or even an "asshole" who stifles genuine debate. Ion, the rhapsode, is often perceived as a simple-minded foil, leading some to feel the dialogue leans more towards a Socratic monologue than a balanced exchange of ideas. A major point of contention is Plato's assertion that poetic talent is solely a result of divine inspiration rather than a cultivated art or knowledge. This view is frequently deemed unconvincing, unfair to artists, and based on what some consider flawed or unrealistic logical standards. Reviewers also mention that the dialogue can be confusing or aporetic, failing to provide a clear, satisfactory resolution to the questions it raises.

Despite these criticisms, Ion is generally regarded as a valuable and stimulating read. It serves as an excellent starting point for anyone interested in Plato's philosophy due to its concise nature and engaging style. The book is highly recommended for readers interested in literature, the arts, and the perennial question of where artistic inspiration originates. It particularly appeals to students of philosophy and literary theory, as well as those who appreciate sharp intellectual debate and the distinctive Socratic method, even when it challenges conventional understanding.
