Reviewers widely praise this book as a solid, fulfilling, and heartwarming tale that deeply engages its readers. Many found it to be a sweet, lovely, and emotionally resonant story, with some readers even moved to tears of happiness. The author is commended for crafting poignant narratives rich in emotion and character, creating compelling and well-developed characters that leave a lasting impression. The book is seen as an excellent read for its ability to teach children important values such as caring for others, the significance of family and friends, and providing insight into the experiences of foster children and farm life. Its authentic writing style and the meaningful message about finding belonging are frequently highlighted as strong positives.

Despite the widespread acclaim, some reviewers noted a few areas for improvement. A recurring comment was that the story, while sweet, felt a bit too short or fast-paced, suggesting that a longer narrative could have allowed for greater depth and character development, particularly for the complex main character. Some adult readers found the ending to be predictable, though this was generally not considered an issue for the target younger audience. There were also observations that the plot could feel rushed, and some characters were occasionally perceived as one-dimensional. Additionally, a few reviewers felt that the shift in relationships between characters happened too suddenly, and the action sequences came on too quickly.

Overall, the book is considered a touching and enjoyable read, particularly lauded for its ability to deliver a feel-good story with a happy ending. It is highly recommended for young readers, with age suggestions ranging from children in lower primary school up to teenagers. Beyond its primary audience, the book also resonates with adults who appreciate heartwarming tales of family and belonging, and it is even suggested as a valuable read for students of psychology or anyone considering fostering, due to its tender exploration of the topic. Fans of Michael Morpurgo's other works, and those seeking a quick, emotional, and inspiring story about finding a place to call home, are likely to find this book a rewarding experience.
