King and Maxwell - Free Preview (first 9 chapters)

Many reviewers found this installment in the King and Maxwell series to be an engaging and hard-to-put-down read, particularly once the action accelerates. It is praised for its fast pace, numerous twists and turns, and a satisfying, often described as "blockbuster," ending. Readers enjoyed the action-packed international adventure, which spans various locations and combines high-stakes political intrigue with humor and a touch of romance. The chemistry between the main characters, King and Maxwell, is frequently highlighted, with their repartee and evolving relationship adding depth. Additionally, the character of Edgar, a computer genius, is often singled out for providing amusing moments. The storyline is generally considered well-developed and presented, with some appreciating the research evident in the political thriller aspects.

Despite the overall positive reception, some readers noted that the book starts slowly, with one reviewer expressing boredom after the initial pages and desiring more immediate action. Another point raised was that certain plot elements could be perceived as "far-fetched," though some found this less bothersome within the context of a quick read. The realism of the romantic subplot and other character relationships was occasionally questioned. Furthermore, one reviewer felt that the recurring theme of former secret service agents consistently saving the country or president felt somewhat unrealistic or repetitive.

Overall, this book is largely regarded as a compelling political thriller. It is highly recommended for readers who enjoy fast-paced, action-packed adventures with international scope. Those who appreciate a blend of political intrigue, humor, and character-driven dynamics, including a touch of romance, will likely find this book appealing. Fans of the King and Maxwell series, David Baldacci's other works, or the associated television show are particularly good candidates. It's considered an excellent choice for a "beach read" or for anyone seeking an entertaining, twist-filled narrative that offers "food for thought" on governmental themes, even if it occasionally requires a suspension of disbelief.
