("KING HENRY V") BY SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM[ AUTHOR ]Paperback 03-1995

The graphic novel adaptation of Henry V is widely praised for making the classic play highly accessible and enjoyable for a broad audience. Reviewers highlight its effectiveness as an introduction to Shakespeare, particularly for readers who might find the original text challenging. The availability of different text versions – Original, Plain, and Quick Text – is a significant positive, allowing readers to choose their preferred level of language and engagement. Many found the graphics to be great or excellent, contributing to a quick and addictive reading experience that left them feeling enriched and cultured. It is frequently recommended as a valuable resource and even deemed by some as the "best way to read Shakespeare."

Despite the generally positive reception, some reviewers expressed reservations. A notable point of criticism was the art style, which a few readers found unappealing, describing the human figures as rigid and not lifelike. One reviewer also found the subject matter of the play, focusing heavily on war, to be boring in this format. While the "Quick Text" option enhances readability, it was noted that this version could make the language less fluid. Additionally, one reviewer suggested the adaptation might be "really for kids," implying it might not satisfy adults seeking a more profound engagement with the source material, and a teacher expressed uncertainty about assigning it for classroom use.

Overall, this graphic novel adaptation of Henry V receives a strong endorsement as an effective and engaging way to experience the play. It successfully bridges the gap between the complexity of Shakespearean text and modern readability, making it a valuable educational and entertainment tool. This book would particularly appeal to students, both young and older, who are being introduced to Shakespeare or need assistance understanding the original play. It is also well-suited for adults looking for an accessible entry point into classics, a quick refresher, or simply an enjoyable graphic novel experience. Readers who appreciate clear storytelling combined with engaging visuals will likely find this adaptation to be a rewarding read.
