The oppressive quiet of Jerusalem's Lot, Maine, hangs heavy in the air as Ben Mears, a writer haunted by a childhood trauma, returns to the town after twenty-five years. His intention is to confront the lingering specter of the Marsten House, an abandoned mansion perched ominously above the town, where he once witnessed a terrifying, ghostly apparition. He hopes to exorcise his personal demons and find inspiration for his next novel within its dark history. As he settles into a local boardinghouse, he begins to forge connections, particularly with the bright and inquisitive Susan Norton, a young woman eager for a life beyond the Lot, and Matt Burke, a compassionate high school English teacher.
However, a new and unsettling presence has also arrived in 'Salem's Lot: the enigmatic Kurt Barlow and his sinister, bald associate, Richard Straker. They purchase the Marsten House, claiming to open an antique store, but their true intentions are far more horrifying. Soon, a chilling wave of disappearances and gruesome deaths begins to ripple through the seemingly idyllic community. The first victim is young Ralphie Glick, a sacrifice to the ancient evil that Barlow embodies. His brother, Danny, soon succumbs to a mysterious illness, only to return from the grave as the town's first vampire, a pallid harbinger of the encroaching darkness.
As the vampiric plague spreads, transforming townsfolk into the insatiably hungry undead, Ben Mears begins to piece together the horrifying truth. He finds an unlikely alliance in Matt Burke, Matt's doctor Jimmy Cody, the local priest Father Callahan, and a remarkably astute young boy named Mark Petrie, who possesses a deep knowledge of horror lore. Together, this desperate band of survivors resolves to fight the encroaching evil, even as the town sinks deeper into a nightmare of degradation, fear, and sharp incisors.
Their battle is fraught with peril and heartbreaking losses. Matt Burke suffers a heart attack after a terrifying encounter with one of Barlow's creatures. Susan, driven by a desperate need to confront the evil, ventures into the Marsten House with Mark, only to be captured by Straker. Mark bravely escapes, striking Straker, but he is too late to save Susan, who falls prey to Barlow and is turned into a vampire. Ben is then faced with the agonizing task of staking the woman he loves, a brutal act of mercy to free her from her undead existence.
The group, now diminished and scarred, presses on. They manage to locate Barlow in the Marsten House. In a climactic confrontation, they succeed in destroying the ancient vampire, but not without further tragedy. Father Callahan, his faith wavering in the face of such profound evil, is forced to drink Barlow's blood, damning him and severing his connection to his church. Jimmy Cody meets a gruesome end, impaled by booby-trapped knives.
Ben and Mark are the sole survivors of their desperate crusade. They escape the now-overrun town, leaving behind a Jerusalem's Lot utterly consumed by the undead. Ben, however, cannot abandon it entirely. He returns to retrieve and bury the bodies of Mark's parents and Jimmy Cody, a quiet act of defiance against the overwhelming darkness. Ultimately, Ben and Mark are forced to set fire to the Marsten House, hoping to cleanse the land and halt the spread of the vampires, but the chilling implication remains: the evil that took root in 'Salem's Lot may merely be dormant, awaiting another opportunity to rise.
