L'engrenage

Reviewers widely praise the book as an enjoyable and engaging read, often noting it as a typical, yet better than average, John Grisham offering. Many found the story interesting, well-written, and briskly paced, making it hard to put down. Readers appreciated being taken into a new world and learning about the judicial system, with some finding the characters and their activities believable. The narrative was consistently entertaining, keeping readers hooked until the very end, and some even enjoyed the moral ambiguity that made it difficult to predict the outcome.

Despite the overall enjoyment, some aspects of the book drew criticism. One reviewer expressed strong dislike for its portrayal of US elections and politics, finding it reflective of things they detest in the American political system. Several readers found the depiction of human nature to be particularly dark and selfish, with characters driven by their own often questionable purposes. The story's cynical portrayal, including specific plot points that seemed morally dubious, left some questioning the ethics presented, and one person felt the ending ultimately fell flat.

In conclusion, the book is generally considered a compelling and entertaining legal thriller in Grisham's signature style, albeit with a notably darker and more cynical tone than some of his other works. It is recommended for fans of John Grisham who enjoy political intrigue, brisk pacing, and a story that delves into the morally ambiguous aspects of power and ambition. Readers who appreciate a challenging narrative that doesn't shy away from depicting human flaws and are open to an ending that might not offer traditional closure will likely find this a rewarding read.
