WICKED has taken everything from Thomas: his life, his memories, and his friends. The trials were supposed to be over, after one final test. Thomas, however, remembers more than WICKED believes, enough to know he cannot trust a single word they say. He has survived the Maze and endured the Scorch, and now he is determined to uncover the full truth behind the organization's deadly experiments and the devastating Flare virus that ravages the world, turning people into Cranks.
As Thomas and his allies embark on their most perilous journey yet, they face moral dilemmas and unpredictable betrayals in their desperate search for a safe haven. The lines between good and evil blur in a world where survival often demands difficult choices. This final installment explores themes of teamwork, trust, and the true cost of freedom, forcing readers to confront whether the ends can ever justify the brutal means.

The sterile white walls of his solitary confinement pressed in, three weeks melting into an indistinguishable blur of silence and gnawing anxiety. Thomas, still reeling from the horrors of the Scorch, found himself once more a prisoner of WICKED, his mind a battleground of fragmented memories and simmering distrust. When Janson, the chilling "Rat Man," finally appeared, he brought with him a twisted offer: the chance to restore all their memories, to erase the very trials that had forged them. Yet, a deeper unease settled when Janson revealed the truth of the Flare, a virus devouring the minds of humanity, and the devastating news that not all were Immune. Among those condemned, a name echoed with a cold dread: Newt.
Thomas, Minho, and Newt, bound by a loyalty forged in fire, refused the memory wipe, a defiant act against WICKED's manipulative grasp. Their resistance, however, was met with force, and they found themselves separated, destined for forced procedures. It was in the operating room that a familiar face, Brenda, emerged from the shadows, revealing her true allegiance: she was against WICKED, and with Jorge, she orchestrated their perilous escape. A frantic flight in a Berg carried them away from the sterile confines, but the world outside was no less dangerous, a landscape scarred by the Flare and populated by the afflicted, the Cranks.
Their desperate journey led them to Denver, a city purportedly safe, where they sought out Hans, a former WICKED scientist, to remove the chips that still tethered them to the organization's control. But Denver proved a deceptive haven, its glittering facade hiding the creeping tendrils of the Flare and the corruption within. Here, a ghost from the past, Gally, reappeared, no longer an enemy but an ally, now a part of the Right Arm, a rebel group fighting WICKED. He warned them of the city's true state, of Immunes vanishing, snatched away for further, crueler experiments.
The specter of the Flare loomed ever larger, and Newt, once a beacon of strength, began to falter. The virus gnawed at his mind, his sanity fraying with each passing day. Thomas watched, helpless, as his friend descended into the madness of the Cranks, the pleas for death becoming more frequent, more desperate. It was a moment of agonizing choice, a test of his compassion and courage, that forced Thomas to confront the unbearable. With a heavy heart, he granted Newt his final, agonizing wish, an act of mercy that shattered him but honored their bond.
Driven by grief and a renewed resolve, Thomas confronted WICKED one last time. He infiltrated their headquarters, a labyrinth of secrets and scientific horrors. There, he learned the full extent of their twisted ambition: his own brain held the key to the cure, and they intended to dissect it, a sacrifice they deemed necessary for humanity's survival. Yet, even within WICKED's core, there were dissenters. Chancellor Ava Paige, the enigmatic leader, had a contingency, a desperate backup plan to save the Immunes.
The headquarters became a war zone as the Right Arm launched its final assault. Explosions rocked the building, and the screech of Grievers, once confined to the Maze, echoed through the halls. Thomas fought through the chaos, aided by Teresa, whose loyalties had always been a shifting tide, but who now, in these final moments, committed herself to him. She showed him a back-door, a Flat Trans leading to a place of true refuge. In a climactic struggle, Thomas strangled Janson, the architect of so much suffering, ending his reign of terror.
As the building crumbled around them, a final, heartbreaking sacrifice unfolded. Teresa, in an act of selfless redemption, pushed Thomas to safety from falling debris, her own life extinguished in the rubble. Thomas, Minho, Brenda, Jorge, Gally, and the remaining Immunes poured through the Flat Trans, leaving behind the burning ruins of WICKED and a world consumed by disease. They emerged into a verdant, untouched paradise, a safe haven where they could finally begin anew. Thomas clutched a final note from Newt, a poignant reminder of their journey, and the weight of the cure, carried within his own blood, a secret hope for a fractured world.

What other readers say
Liked
The reviews highlight that the book maintains the series' characteristic fast-paced, action-packed style, delivering an exciting and suspenseful reading experience. Many readers found the storytelling to be gripping, with thrilling twists that kept them engaged and eager to turn pages. The author's writing is praised for its ability to draw readers into the characters' experiences and evoke strong emotional responses. Particular affection is expressed for certain supporting characters, who are noted for their loyalty, wit, and overall appeal. Additionally, some reviewers appreciated the book's exploration of complex moral questions and its contribution to the dystopian genre, finding it an addictive and memorable ride.
Disliked
However, a significant number of reviews express profound disappointment, especially with the book serving as the series finale. A recurring criticism is the perceived failure to answer crucial questions and resolve major plotlines established in earlier installments, leaving many mysteries unexplained and the conclusion feeling like a "cop-out." Character development, particularly for the protagonist, is frequently cited as weak or inconsistent, with decisions often seen as illogical or unheroic. Female characters are often described as underdeveloped and interchangeable, leading to a frustrating and unconvincing romantic subplot. The plot itself is sometimes labeled as convoluted, convenient, or lacking clear direction, with certain action sequences and character choices deemed unrealistic or poorly described. Many felt the series deteriorated in quality after its initial book.
In short
Ultimately, this book proves to be a polarizing conclusion to a series that many felt started with great potential but declined over time. While some readers retained a fondness for the characters or the overall high-octane nature of the story, a large segment found the ending deeply frustrating and unsatisfying due to unresolved plots and inconsistent character arcs. The book is frequently recommended for younger readers, typically those in the 11-14 age range, or for individuals seeking a quick, action-driven escape without a strong emphasis on logical consistency, detailed world-building, or comprehensive resolution. Readers who prioritize these latter elements, or who expect a robust and conclusive finale to a trilogy, may find themselves largely disappointed.
