La Pareja de al lado

The acid churns in Anne's stomach. She has had too much wine, a desperate attempt to endure the dinner party next door. Through a haze of alcohol, she watches her neighbor, Cynthia, drape herself over her husband, Marco. Cynthia's top is cut so low, her breasts so prominent, that Marco is practically rubbing his nose in her cleavage. Anne seethes, feeling frumpy and overweight six months after having the baby. It was a mistake to come. When the sitter canceled, she should have stayed home with Cora. But Marco had insisted. “It will be good for you to get out,” he'd said, a veiled reference to the depression that has clouded her new motherhood.

They'd left their six-month-old daughter alone in her crib, relying on a baby monitor with a smashed video screen. Every half hour, one of them slipped back home to check on her. Now, it is past one in the morning, and a gnawing anxiety consumes Anne. She tugs on Marco's arm, her voice tight. “We should leave.” He is strangely boisterous, having too much fun to listen. Finally, her patience gone, she gathers the monitor and her purse. Her abruptness sobers him. They walk the few paces from the neighbors' grand front door to their own, and Anne stops dead. The door is ajar. “I know I locked it!” she says, her voice shrill. But Marco is not listening. He is right behind her as she runs up the stairs, down the hall, and into the butter-yellow nursery. When she sees the empty crib, she screams.

The house is instantly a crime scene, pulsing with the silent, circling red lights of police cars. Detective Rasbach, a calm man with piercing blue eyes, listens as the panicked couple recounts their story. He notes the details that don't fit: the smashed bathroom mirror, the vial of antidepressants in Anne's name, the disabled motion-detector light on the back door. The parents seem genuinely distraught, but something feels wrong. He brings in cadaver dogs, a grim procedure that makes Anne's visiting father roar in protest. But the dogs find nothing. The house is clean, scrubbed of any evidence of an intruder. The only clues are a set of tire tracks in the garage that don't match the family's Audi and a neighbor's report of a quiet, dark-colored car creeping down the back lane with its headlights off, just minutes after Marco's final 12:30 a.m. check on the baby.

Suspicion tightens around Anne and Marco like a noose. The press descends, their cameras capturing every flicker of guilt and shame on the couple's faces. The story of the baby left home alone turns public sympathy to scorn. Inside the house, the strain begins to fracture their marriage. Anne's wealthy parents, Richard and Alice Dries, arrive, their barely concealed contempt for Marco poisoning the air. They never thought he was good enough for their daughter, and now their fears seem horribly justified. It is Marco who suggests the possibility of a kidnapping for ransom; after all, everyone knows Anne's family has money.

A package arrives in the mail, wedged in their letter slot. Inside is a mint green onesie - the one Cora was wearing. Anne holds it to her face, inhaling the faint, precious scent of her daughter. A typewritten note is pinned to the fabric, demanding five million dollars. *Do NOT tell the police,* it warns. *Any sign of police you will never see her again.* Relief, terrifying and fragile, floods through them. Richard and Alice scramble to raise the cash, and a plan is formed. Marco will make the drop alone. He drives for an hour to an abandoned farm, the three gym bags full of money locked in his trunk. He enters the designated garage and sees Cora's car seat in the corner. He rushes toward it, his heart soaring, and rips away the blanket. The seat is empty. Before he can process the betrayal, a sharp pain explodes in his head, and the world goes black.

When Marco awakens, the money is gone. The police find him slumped by his car, a broken man. The last thread of hope seems to have snapped. The investigation stalls, and the days that follow are a blur of grief and suspicion. Then, Anne sees Marco emerging from Cynthia's backyard. He has been sneaking next door. The betrayal is a fresh, sharp wound. In a rage, she confronts him, and in their ensuing fight, she discovers a secret, untraceable cell phone hidden inside an air duct. He has been lying about everything.

The lies are deeper and darker than an affair. Cynthia, it turns out, has a secret of her own: a hidden camera trained on her backyard. She shows Anne the footage from the night Cora disappeared. On the screen, Anne watches in horror as Marco emerges from their house at 12:33 a.m., carrying their baby wrapped in a blanket. He walks to the garage, disappears inside for a minute, and comes out empty-handed. He staged the entire kidnapping.

The truth finally unravels in a torrent of accusations and fear. Marco's business was failing. Desperate, he conspired with a man he'd met - a man later found murdered - to fake the kidnapping and extort the ransom from Anne's parents. But as Marco confesses his foolish, greedy plan, Anne reveals a secret of her own. She remembers seeing the murdered accomplice years ago, in quiet conversation with her own father.

The final, sickening truth comes to light in a tense confrontation at her parents' mansion. Her father, Richard, orchestrated the entire plot. He hired the accomplice to befriend a struggling Marco and plant the idea of the kidnapping, all to frame his son-in-law, destroy his marriage, and bring his daughter and granddaughter back under his control. When his accomplice got greedy, Richard murdered him with a spade and took the baby himself, planning to emerge the hero. In the end, Cora is found, alive but neglected, in the care of a terrified teenager paid to watch her. Richard is arrested, a monster hiding behind a veneer of paternal love.

In the quiet of their home, with Cora finally safe in her crib, the fragile peace is shattered by the flashing red lights of another ambulance. It is parked next door, at Cynthia's. Marco rushes downstairs and finds Anne sitting on the sofa in the dark, her hands and face splattered with blood, a large carving knife resting in her lap. She looks up at him, her eyes hollow and vacant. “I don't know,” she whispers. “I don't remember.”
