The pearl buyers, a cartel who had long kept the divers in their thrall, prepared to cheat Kino, their faces masks of indifference. Juana, sensing the shift in the air, the rising tide of envy and malice, began to feel a deep unease. But Kino, now rigid with defiance, refused to be cheated. He would go to the capital, he vowed, where justice might be found. That night, the first shadows of violence fell upon their home. Intruders attacked, seeking the pearl, and Kino fought them off, his blood boiling with a newfound ferocity. Juana, desperate, tried to cast the pearl back into the sea, crying that it would destroy them all. But Kino, consumed by his dream, struck her down, his love for the pearl now eclipsing his love for his wife.

The attacks continued, escalating in their savagery. Their canoe, their lifeline to the sea and their livelihood, was smashed. Their humble brush house was set ablaze, its meager possessions consumed by fire. Kino, now a murderer in self-defense, realized they could no longer remain in La Paz. Kino slaughtered the men, but the victory was hollow, for when he returned to the cave, Juana knelt over Coyotito, who lay silent and still, a bullet wound in his head.

Devastated, Kino and Juana returned to La Paz, no longer the hopeful, simple couple who had set out. They walked side by side, their faces etched with grief, the great pearl now a monstrous thing, reflecting only tragedy. They approached the sea, the place where their hope had been born and then twisted into despair. With a powerful, final gesture, Kino hurled the magnificent pearl, the Pearl of the World, back into the dark waters, watching it sink, forever reclaiming its place in the depths, and finally, releasing them from its terrible grip.
