La Sociedad contra el estado

The book is widely lauded as a groundbreaking and thought-provoking work that challenges fundamental assumptions in political anthropology. Many reviewers praise its "decolonized gaze" and its critical examination of Western ethnocentrism, which has historically shaped understandings of non-state societies. A central strength lies in its core thesis: that so-called "primitive" societies are not merely lacking a state, but actively and consciously organize against the emergence of statist structures, deliberately maintaining egalitarian and classless forms of social organization. Readers appreciate the book's ability to dismantle preconceptions about societal development, offering concrete examples from South American indigenous cultures that illustrate sophisticated systems where power is diffused, leaders serve rather than command, and economies are structured to meet needs without generating coercive surplus. Its stimulating ideas are noted for their influence on contemporary thought, and some reviewers commend the eloquent and poetic prose found in various essays.

Despite its significant impact, the book draws some criticism. A recurring point is that certain ideas or analyses may appear "outdated" or employ "obsolete notions" by current anthropological standards. Some reviewers find Clastres' portrayal of indigenous societies occasionally romanticized, suggesting he attributes an overly sophisticated "political philosophy" to systems that may have evolved more organically. Concerns are also raised about a tendency to homogenize diverse non-state societies, potentially overlooking their unique complexities. From a methodological perspective, some critics argue the work is too theoretical and relies less on empirical ethnographic material, leading to overly reductionist models. Additionally, while the book raises profound questions about the origins of the State, some find its proposed answers or hypotheses to be underdeveloped. A notable critique highlights the book's limited attention to non-political forms of power, particularly gender relations, which is seen as a significant oversight.

Ultimately, "Society Against the State" is recognized as an essential and deeply enlightening contribution to political thought, despite its acknowledged limitations and areas of contention. Its enduring value lies in its powerful challenge to conventional narratives surrounding the State, power, and societal development. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in anthropology, political science, and philosophy who are eager to critically examine the foundations of statehood and explore alternative models of social organization. It particularly appeals to those seeking to challenge Western-centric views, deconstruct ingrained biases, and engage with provocative ideas that compel a rethinking of fundamental concepts like authority and progress, even if they do not fully agree with every argument presented.
