Last Mile

The book is widely praised for its highly engaging and readable nature, with many reviewers describing it as a compulsive page-turner that keeps them engrossed from start to finish. A significant highlight is the protagonist, Amos Decker, who is consistently lauded as a brilliant, unique, and fascinating character. His perfect memory and unusual social skills make him both intriguing and surprisingly likable. Reviewers also appreciate the dynamic within his team, noting how his colleagues understand and support him. The plot is frequently commended for being compelling, suspenseful, and filled with well-executed twists and turns that keep readers guessing until the very end, culminating in a satisfying resolution. Many found it to be an improvement over the first book in the series, with particular enjoyment derived from the strong supporting character of Melvin Mars and his developing relationship with Decker.

Despite the widespread praise, some reviewers expressed significant reservations. A recurring criticism centers on the plot's believability, with several finding it implausible, convoluted, or containing scenarios that stretch credulity. Concerns were also raised about the book's length, with some feeling it was unnecessarily drawn out by repetition and an abundance of mind-numbing, irrelevant details. While Amos Decker's character is generally admired, some found the supporting cast to be one-dimensional or "cardboard," lacking depth. Additionally, a few reviewers felt the author's political or social viewpoints, particularly regarding portrayals of racism in the South, were stereotypical, outdated, and overly subjective, detracting from the narrative.

Overall, the book is generally considered a compelling and enjoyable thriller, with its strengths often outweighing its weaknesses for most readers. It offers a captivating mystery driven by a truly memorable protagonist. This book would particularly appeal to fans of David Baldacci's previous work and those who enjoy the Amos Decker series, though many noted it can also be read as a standalone. It is highly recommended for readers who appreciate unique detective characters with extraordinary abilities, fast-paced crime fiction, and intricate cold cases filled with unexpected developments. Readers who can overlook occasional implausible plot points or detailed descriptions will likely find themselves thoroughly entertained.
