Last Olympian

The end of the world began when a pegasus landed on the hood of my car. I was with my friend Rachel on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic, and for a few minutes, things were almost normal. But my pegasus, Blackjack, doesn't do social calls. On his back was Charles Beckendorf, our best armorer from Camp Half-Blood, dressed for war. Our mission was finally on: a desperate, two-man assault to blow up the *Princess Andromeda*, the Titan lord Kronos's monster-infested cruise ship, before it could reach New York. We knew the odds. We went anyway.

The mission was a trap. We were expected. After a frantic fight through the ship's halls, I was cornered on the main deck by Kronos himself, wearing the body of my old friend Luke. Kronos's army had already captured Beckendorf. I saw my friend look at me, his hand moving toward the detonator watch on his wrist. There was no time. A far greater threat was marching across America - the monster Typhon, father of all monsters, had broken free from his prison under Mount St. Helens. The other gods had gone to fight him, leaving Olympus vulnerable. My real fight, he insisted, was up there. He sent me back to camp with a grim message: it was time for me to hear the Great Prophecy in its entirety.

Back at Camp Half-Blood, the news of Beckendorf's death fell like a shroud. His girlfriend, Silena Beauregard, was heartbroken, and the camp's morale shattered. The infighting between cabins grew worse, with Clarisse and the Ares cabin refusing to fight over a dispute about a captured flying chariot. The battle for Manhattan began with an enchantment. The god of dreams, Morpheus, cast a spell that put every mortal on the island to sleep, leaving the city silent and defenseless. We were forty demigods against an army of thousands. We set up defenses at the bridges and tunnels, a thin line of heroes against a rising tide of monsters. The Hunters of Artemis, led by my friend Thalia, arrived to hold the Lincoln Tunnel. But the enemy was everywhere. I faced the Minotaur again on the Williamsburg Bridge, and though I defeated him, Annabeth took a poisoned dagger meant for me, a blade aimed at my single vulnerable point. She nearly died.

The fighting raged for days. We were pushed back block by block, retreating toward the Empire State Building, the anchor of Olympus. The final stand took place in the throne room of Olympus itself. The city of the gods was in ruins. As Grover, Annabeth, and I faced Kronos, I understood. The cursed blade of the prophecy wasn't my sword - it was the knife Luke had given Annabeth years ago, cursed by the promise he'd broken to her. As Kronos and I fought, Annabeth risked everything to appeal to the part of Luke that still existed inside the Titan. “Family, Luke,” she pleaded. “You promised.” Her words, and the sight of her wounded, reached him. Luke, for a final, heroic moment, regained control. He knew his own weak spot, the one place on his body left mortal after his own dip in the Styx. There was no time. I gave him Annabeth's knife. He took it, and with his own hand, struck the fatal blow, destroying himself and casting Kronos's essence into the void.

In the aftermath, the gods returned, having defeated Typhon with my father's last-minute aid. They offered me the greatest prize of all: godhood. I looked at Annabeth, at the faces of my friends, and thought of all the demigods who had been forgotten, who had turned to Kronos out of bitterness. I refused immortality. Instead, I made the gods swear upon the River Styx to claim all their children, to build cabins for every god, minor and major, so no half-blood would ever feel abandoned again.

On my last day at camp that summer, my sixteenth birthday, we stood on Half-Blood Hill. Rachel Dare, having found her own strange destiny, had become the new Oracle and delivered the next Great Prophecy, another dark verse about fire, storms, and death. But for once, I wasn't worried about the future. Annabeth stood beside me, her hand in mine. After everything, we had a chance to build something that would last. As our friends cheered and carried us toward the lake for a celebratory dunking, I created an air bubble for us at the bottom. And for the first time in what felt like forever, I had a birthday that was just about perfect.
