Le Chemin des dagues

The Path of Daggers, the eighth installment in The Wheel of Time series, is seen by some readers as a surprisingly enjoyable entry, especially for those reading the entire series consecutively rather than waiting for individual releases. Many found the pacing to be well-managed, benefiting from its shorter length compared to preceding volumes. Reviewers frequently highlight specific scenes as incredible, tense, exciting, pivotal, and epic, with the first third of the book often receiving particular praise. Rand's evolving storyline and internal conflicts are consistently noted as engaging and a favorite aspect, showcasing moments of immense power and dealing with major conflicts. Egwene's character development and strategic actions are also commended as a satisfying and impactful surprise. Additionally, some readers appreciated the intricate political maneuvering, character banter, and the resolution of a significant magical event, all contributing to the series' renowned world-building and storytelling.

Despite its merits, the book faces significant criticism, most notably for the complete absence of a popular main character, especially after a cliffhanger in the previous volume. Many reviewers describe the overall experience as slow, bloated, or a 'slog,' citing minimal plot and character progression, leading to a feeling of the story treading water or serving merely as an interlude. The narrative is often said to be filled with superfluous characters and names that do not significantly advance the plot. Specific character arcs, such as Elayne's, are frequently labeled as boring, unlikable, or overly focused on bickering among female characters. Similarly, another main character's storyline is often criticized for feeling stagnant and repetitive, particularly regarding their relationship dynamics. The portrayal of many female characters, especially powerful ones, as overly catty, prone to petty disagreements, or engaging in jarring physical discipline, is a common point of contention. The prose itself is sometimes described as long-winded, tedious, or difficult to engage with, detracting from the overall reading experience.

Overall, The Path of Daggers elicits mixed reactions, often balancing moments of brilliance with sections that many consider the series' weakest. While it is frequently identified as part of the infamous 'slog' period, some readers found it more palatable than expected, especially when read without long waits between books, which helps temper the impact of its numerous unresolved plotlines and cliffhangers. This book is best suited for dedicated fans of The Wheel of Time who are deeply invested in the overarching narrative and world, willing to persevere through slower sections for crucial character developments and epic moments that set the stage for future installments. However, readers seeking rapid plot advancement, self-contained story arcs, or a consistently engaging pace may find this volume challenging.
