Le garçon qui fut élevé comme un chien

Dr. Bruce Perry's book is widely lauded as a fascinating, riveting, and deeply insightful exploration of childhood trauma and brain development. Reviewers consistently praise the author's compassionate and empathetic approach to extremely difficult subject matter, making complex neuroscience and psychological concepts accessible to a broad audience. Many found the book to be eye-opening and transformative, highlighting the profound impact of early experiences on an individual's life and the crucial role of human relationships, love, and consistent care in fostering healing and recovery. The book is commended for its down-to-earth explanations and for providing a neurosequential approach to therapy that offers hope for children who have experienced severe adversity.

However, the book is not without its criticisms. Some readers found the subject matter intensely heavy and disturbing, describing the stories as heart-wrenching and at times difficult to read due to the nature of child abuse and neglect. A notable point of contention for some was the author's tone, which a few reviewers perceived as condescending or indicative of a "Savior Complex." Concerns were also raised about the scientific explanations, with some feeling they were either too simplistic, repetitive, or presented as groundbreaking discoveries when they amounted to common knowledge for experienced caregivers. There were also comments about potential dated descriptions of certain conditions and occasional assumptions of causality.

Despite these reservations, the general consensus is that this is a highly impactful and valuable read. The book effectively shifts perspective from judgment to a deeper understanding of human behavior shaped by early trauma and underscores the immense potential for healing through connection and targeted interventions. It is strongly recommended for a wide audience, including parents, caregivers, educators, healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in child development, psychology, neuroscience, trauma recovery, and fostering greater compassion in society.
