Le Manipulateur

Many readers found this book to be a welcome return to form for John Grisham, reminiscent of his earlier, highly engaging works. Praised for its engrossing nature, gripping pace, and first-class dialogue, the novel reportedly keeps readers on the edge of their seats with thrilling twists and turns. The story is described as a fascinating cat-and-mouse game with federal authorities, offering a clever and complex plot with multiple surprises. Reviewers highlighted its entertaining quality and ability to raise chilling questions about the potential abuse of federal power, making it a fun and thought-provoking read for many.

Conversely, a significant number of reviewers expressed strong disappointment, primarily due to an unlikable and hypocritical main character whom they found difficult to root for. Critics often described the protagonist as a "thug" or "con man" rather than a hero fighting for justice. A major point of contention was the plot's lack of credibility, with many finding the schemes unbelievable, far-fetched, or bordering on fantasy. Concerns were also raised about the portrayal of federal agents as incompetent, the lack of character development, and a perceived absence of significant plot twists or a climactic moment, leading some to find the story slow, boring, and predictable after the initial premise. Some felt the second half of the book failed to deliver on the promise of the first, becoming sluggish or feeling like a different, less engaging story.

Overall, opinions on this book are sharply divided, ranging from "winner" to "mess." While some consider it a successful suspenseful tale that brings back faith in Grisham's storytelling, others found it to be a forgettable experience. This novel seems best suited for readers who enjoy a "man against the system" narrative, even if it ventures into unrealistic territory, and those who appreciate a "long con" type of plot over traditional legal drama. It may appeal to those seeking a light-action thriller with a unique premise and who are less concerned with a morally upright protagonist or strict adherence to realism and character depth. However, readers expecting a classic Grisham courtroom thriller with a clear hero and intricate legal battles may find themselves disappointed.
