Le Mariage parfait

Sarah Morgan is a powerhouse, a woman who builds empires while her husband, Adam, struggles to write a single sentence. Her life is a fortress of tailored blazers, perfect updos, and billable hours. The disappointment in Adam's voice when she cancels another weekend away for their tenth anniversary is a familiar sound, a dull ache she soothes with expensive gifts and promises of “someday.” She knows their marriage is cracking under the weight of her ambition, the distance growing between their D.C. townhouse and the secluded lake house he escapes to. But after this one last case, she will make it right. She will give him what he's always wanted: a family.

For Adam, the lake house is more than a writer's retreat; it's a separate world where he is not the failed novelist living in his wife's shadow. It's where he found Kelly Summers, a waitress with doe eyes and a messy, unapologetic beauty that feels like a rebellion against Sarah's perfect order. Their affair is a fever, a secret life lived in the shadows of his marriage. He reads the threatening texts on Kelly's phone from her abusive husband, Scott, and feels a surge of protectiveness. But when Sarah calls, her voice soft with a sudden desire to have a baby, guilt floods him. He makes a choice. He will end it with Kelly. He will go home and be the husband Sarah deserves.

The next morning, the dream of a new beginning shatters against the wood of his front door. Sheriff Ryan Stevens and his deputy are on his doorstep, their faces grim. Adam's confusion turns to panic, then to rage as they force their way inside. He is thrown to the ground, handcuffed, and shoved into a squad car. The charge is unthinkable: Kelly Summers has been found in his bed at the lake house, stabbed to death. The last person to see her alive, his DNA all over her body, Adam is the only suspect.

Sarah arrives not as a grieving, betrayed wife, but as a warrior. “I am here as your lawyer, not your wife,” she tells Adam, her voice stripped of all warmth. She dives into the case with chilling efficiency, her mind a steel trap of legal strategy. The facts are damning: Adam's semen, his fingerprints, a note he left for Kelly that could be read as a love letter or a death threat. But Sarah finds cracks in the prosecution's perfect narrative. Kelly was pregnant with Adam's child. Her husband, Scott, is a volatile local cop with a history of violence. And Kelly wasn't who she seemed; her real name was Jenna Way, and she was once the prime suspect in the murder of her first husband.

The investigation spirals into a labyrinth of secrets. A threatening photo of Adam and Kelly appears, sent by an unknown tormentor with a simple message: “END IT OR I WILL.” Sarah's quiet assistant, Anne, confesses to sending the photo, claiming she only wanted to expose the affair to protect Sarah. Then, a shocking connection surfaces: Sarah's arrogant colleague, Bob Miller, is the brother of Kelly's first husband, a man with every reason to want revenge. Every new discovery only deepens the mystery, creating a storm of reasonable doubt around Adam.

Confined to the lake house on bail, Adam descends into a paranoid torment. Convinced Sarah is missing something, he launches his own secret investigation with a young reporter, convinced that someone from Kelly's dark past is framing him. His frantic, drunken phone calls and reckless meetings shatter Sarah's trust. In a final, desperate act, he breaks his house arrest and storms into Sarah's office, accusing Anne and Bob in a wild scene of violence and chaos that lands him back in jail, looking every bit the unhinged killer the prosecution claims he is.

The trial is a spectacle. Sarah, in a stunning performance of loyalty and legal brilliance, stands before the jury as the wife defending the husband who broke her heart. She paints a portrait of Kelly Summers not as a victim, but as a manipulative adulteress with a violent past, a woman who collected enemies like souvenirs. She lays out a buffet of alternative suspects - the abusive husband, the vengeful brother-in-law, the mysterious third man whose DNA was also found inside Kelly. She creates such a fog of doubt that an acquittal feels within reach.

The verdict is a shock: Guilty. Adam is sentenced to death. Eleven years later, Sarah visits him on the day of his execution. She is no longer the harried lawyer but a vision of calm, dressed in white. He is a broken man, clinging to his last moments. As he weeps, she leans in and whispers a final truth in his ear, a secret that twists his face into a mask of pure horror just as the lethal injection begins to flow. “I know for a fact it wasn't you,” she says, a slow, cold smile spreading across her face.

Watching him die from behind the glass, Sarah feels nothing but the quiet satisfaction of a plan perfectly executed. She was the killer. She and Bob, Kelly's brother-in-law, had orchestrated the entire thing. She had drugged Adam and Kelly, crept into the lake house, and stabbed her husband's mistress thirty-seven times, framing him for the crime. A divorce would have given Adam half of everything she'd earned, and she would never be weak and broken like her own mother - a woman she had also killed years before. Now, her life is perfect. She climbs into the passenger seat of a Mercedes where Bob is waiting. In the back, their young daughter smiles. They drive away from the prison, back to their beautiful home on the lake, leaving the last loose end of their perfect marriage to turn cold on a gurney.
